Time:  Midnight (D+1 after the Temple's Destruction);

 - - - The Ghast leaves behind the Army of Orcus and the ancient temple, heading back to Elmshade.  He had to taste some cold vengeance from the hide of a horse-assed murderer Hi'el, his bull-headed compatriot Riddick, and lastly, the flighty whore Tessa.  Oh, yes, vengeance would be his, and their Undead hides would serve as his slaves for as long as he savored their torment.  Through the moonlight and moon shadows of the forest, the rotting former Half-Elf trots toward the village of Elmshade, unaware that other creatures such as Drow of the Shadow Knights prowled the night. - - -

 - - - Several miles from the ancient temple, the ground before him explodes upward, showering rocks and earth all about, and razor sharp teeth and claws belonging to a Land Shark lash out at the Ghast Knight.  Nothing like a little rotten stinky meat to add some flavor to a bland diet.  Both claws miss luckily miss the armored knight as does the bite.  Cel, knowing he was out-matched by the huge creature, practices the time honored tradition of running away to fight another day, and dashes away to the south dodging through the trees.  The Bullette takes a parting shot at the fleeing Ghast, missing, and chases after the Undead, slowly losing ground among the closely arranged trees.  The fleet Ghast quickly elludes the hulking brute, and scares up a giant lynx also fleeing the area in advance of the new threat of the Weremacht forces.  The former Half-Elf continues on his mission of vengeance. - - -

Both acolytes were looking forward to warm drinks and beds at the Twisted Root, and made the turn down the road to the Southwest which would take them to the Inn. Darien had been limping slightly, his recently re-grown leg still paining him a little bit. Melanie was deep in discussion with him about the healing of his leg when the ghast attacked them from the shadows of the Tanner's shop. (Darien surprise roll = 4, Melanie surprise roll = 3 Darien % roll = 49, Melanie % roll = 68).

 - - - Granted, the area around the leather shop always seemed shrouded in a malodorous stench on account of the skinning and tanning, but tonight seemed particularly ripe as the pair passed it.  From the darkness of the trees, Cel watched the Priests, self-involved with their thoughts of warm drinks and soft beds at the Twisted Root, pass his hiding spot, and with their backs to him, rushes from brush to attack.  The telltale creaking and clinking of his tarnished, filth-covered, field plate armor heralds the Ghast's attack, surprising Melanie, as the Undead Knight, with a ferocious growl "Vrraaahhh!!!", leaps upon Darien when he turns to see what they faced.  The rank stench of the Ghast burns their nostrils.*  Close to two hundred pounds of hissing and spitting Undead Knight lands on the Priest of Mielikki before he can respond, and viciously rakes it claws through the flesh of his torso.**  Clenching his clawed hands tightly into fists gripping the man's flesh, Cel jerks the follower of Mielikki to his slavering jaws, and deeply sinks vile fangs into the juncture of Darien's neck and right shoulder.*** - - -

Completely taken off guard, Melanie gasped as the hideous undead attacked from the shadows of the tanner's shop. The smell hit her and she gagged, doubled over and tried hard not to vomit. ((Failed d20 save vs. poison with a roll of 3)) She saw Darien getting hurt out of the corner of her eyes and she squeezed them shut, silently praying to Mielikki to help her get her nausea under control. Melanie weakly held out her holy symbol towards the ghast with one hand as she held her stomach with the other. If she could just stop the awful churning in her stomach, she could try to cast a spell at the foul humanoid...
Melanie HP = 62/62 Init. roll = 9

Darien wasn't as surprised as Melanie, but he was still taken aback at the ferocity of the foe who assailed them. The stench was horrid, but the big man fought against the queasiness which had overcome his friend. ((Saved vs. poison with a roll of 9)) As Cerebril leaped upon him and raked through his robes, Darien was painfully reminded that he needed to repair the leather armor he wore under them. The leather had been split with his were-bear transformation in the battle at the Temple, and he had not yet had the time to get it mended. ((Saves vs. para. from1st 2 claw hits with rolls of 20 and 15)) Brother Darien growled in pain as the ghast's filthy claws tore through his stomach, and the priest felt his rage fast welling inside of him. He knew the bear would emerge again soon if pressed beyond his own ability to battle this abomination. Then the undead knight sank its fangs into his neck and poor Darien felt the cold numbing of the paralysis begin. ((Failed save vs. para from bite with a roll of 5)). "AGHHhhhhhh!!" He screamed in agony at the wound. He tried to punch the ghast's head to dislodge him from his neck, hoping to land a solid hit. ((2 punches attack rolls: 9 and 1 - yay *rolls eyes* typical luck...))

Mielikki's followers both suspected this would be a tough fight. Melanie desperately tried to gather her senses enough to cast and Darien felt the hairs on his body prickling, signalling a need to shift from his normal appearance...the bear inside him raged with the pain, wanting to be released...((% roll to see if change is triggered = according to info. from Loki re: Mielikki-bestowed wereform, 50% or lower and the change is triggered, since it is not dependent upon moon phases; until characters have lived with wereform for at least a year, thus enabling them to change at will as they gain more control. 50% or higher and they can keep their regular form, but must make checks every round if in melee to see if the wereform emerges. If they take more than half of their full HP damage, change is triggered automatically. Roll for this round = 54%, so he stays as Darien for now. If you need more info about this stuff, let me know.)) Darien held the beast inside in check as he struggled with the ghast atop him, and tried to fight his way free of the undead without ripping out his own throat...

Darien HP = 28/41 Init. roll = 3

Mielikki must have been listening to Melanie, because the cleric managed to suck in a lungful of fresh, clean air. ((Saved vs. poison with a Nat 20)) The brown-haired woman feared for her friend and struggled to recognize the names it spat towards her. "W-who?" she started to ask, and then it clicked. She threw up a hand in a placating motion. "Wait! I...I don't know where Tessa or the minotaur have gone! But Hi'el has left town, headed..." She scrunched her face as if in confusion, trying to remember, but really trying to buy a few seconds' precious time. "I think he was headed North. He's gone on a quest of some sort, but he's been gone a whole day already. Please! Let him go!" She pleaded with the ghast for Darien's safety. Melanie didn't have extensive experience with undead, but she understood that this one was no simple, mindless zombie.
HP: 62/62

Darien's mind raced, and even though he was paralyzed, he could still try to formulate his next move. He felt the prick of the ghast's ragged claws and felt his anger brewing inside at his current, helpless state. The large man had no idea if the foul, unholy beast would let him go, even if he learned the information he wanted, but he also recognized that Celebril did not appear to be under any outside control. He took note of the tarnished plate armor beneath the filth and found himself wondering if this warrior had been cursed with his state of undeath...the armor appeared to be exquisitely crafted, and usually only nobles, knights or paladins wore such extravagant trappings. Cel's armor was comparable to another knight's who had recently fought beside them (Kur'ai). When he heard the names Cel uttered, his puzzlement grew. What on earth could this vile creature want with those three....?

 - - - Infuriated beyond reason by the delays to his vengeance and NOW this woman's complicit deception, the Undead Knight could still smell Hi'el's and Tessa's scent on the Priestess from just the night prior when she helped the Silenni tended her on her sick bed.  Something about the debutante's fever smell triggers recognition in the Carrion Eater as well as unleashes his Ghast nature.  At Melanie*, Cel acidly spits, "You lie!!!!!  I smell them!!!  You help the 'Lycan' and my murder!!!  He dies!!!"  And with no further warning, all the Priestess can do is watch as it rips the black-clawed hands across Darien's throat**, throwing him aside to lay 'bleeding to death'***.  The former Half-elf stands fully consumed with rage and bloodlust, intending to kill Melanie next. - - -

"NO!" the anguished cry flew from Melanie's throat as she watched the horrible ghast slice open Darien's, helpless to stop it. Her rage quickly followed the pain of grief and she almost attempted to turn the undead, but a calmness flowed into her and she instead she withdrew a precious vial of holy water from her robes. She uncorked it and brandished her holy symbol in front of her as a talisman against the ghast. It glowed with the power of her faith in Mielikki, and Melanie intended to use the holy water to either cast Protection From Evil around her, or dump it into the ghast's face when he attacked. The undead's next actions would determine hers. "Filthy, evil beast!" she roared at him as her tears for Darien only clarified and focused her anger. "You're an abomination to the Goddess and you must fall!"
((Her Init. this round was 3, and since the spell Prot. from Evil requires Holy Water as the final component, I assumed she would have to get it out first, otherwise I would have immediately had her cast it. HP: 62/62))

Meanwhile, Darien welcomed the change that washed over him, reveling in the wild strength and power of his Goddess-bestowed, were-bear form. The jagged wound on his neck began to instantly seal as his body sprouted long, coarse, silvery fur interspersed with black, almost symbolic markings on his back. ((In fact, the growth of the black fur patches do form recognizable symbols of Mielikki)). It wasn't instantaneous and still caused him pain which caused him to scream, though the sound coming from his mangled but healing throat was more of a growl and wasn't as loud as it would have been otherwise. His hands stretched into wide, padded paws which grew the elongated talons of a grizzly, and his face contorted as his snout grew longer. Darien was a big man anyway, but his girth doubled and his legs thickened considerably, also sprouting lethal black claws at the tips of his former toes. Of course, his robes were split asunder and the ragged studded leather armor beneath now became completely useless as this second change into a bear shredded the remains into strips which fell away from his huge form. His second roar was stronger and louder, more full of life. Even Melanie's hair stood on the back of her neck at the sight of the larger-than-life, pissed off ursine forming behind the ghast.
HP: 30/50
((Init. roll for this round was 9. Change takes one round to complete, as with any were-form. HP: 27 - 13 = 14 +16 regained from change = 30. In this form, his HP are upped from his normal 41 to 50 total. Other changes include: STR = 18/00, CON = 15, DEX = 17, AC: 3, Attacks: (3) claw(1-3)/claw(1-3)/bite(2-8) or hug for 2d8 dmg. Regen. at 2 HP/rnd. Weapons must be silver or +1 to hit.))

 - - - Fixated upon the Priestess, the Undead Knight completely ignores Darien believing the noises the man makes are those of him choking on his own blood as he dies.  The Ghast could careless about the invocation Melanie makes, and launches himself at her.  Cel lashes out with swift swipes of his blackened claws, and lunges at her his slavering jaws snapping shut*.  Despite Melanie's invocation of Mielikki's protection from evil**, a wavering barrier of silvery appears each time the vile Undead attacks, and alarmingly doesn't seem to be hampering its attacks.  So either the magical barrier she'd invoked worked or the Undead missed of its own accord.  And behind the Ghast, all Werebear Darien could do is growl in impotent fury, and watch still paralyzed as Melanie is visciously attacked. - - -

Darien could only watch helplessly from the ground as his beloved sister in the faith was attacked by the horrible ghast. He had no idea how long he would be unable to help her, not knowing how long the undead's paralyzing cold would last. He felt his wounds continuing to heal at an accelerated rate, thanks to his present form, but his rage and grief at being unable to help Melanie made the whole situation more of a torment than anything else. Not knowing what else to do, Darien shut his eyes and silently prayed with all his might to his Goddess to help them both. Great Mother, please aid us at this desperate time of need! I am unable to help one of your faithful servants destroy a unholy creature who would kill us both! Please, Great Mielikki, hear my fervent prayer and aid us!
((Still paralyzed. HP = 32/50 God Call roll: 4))

Deeply dismayed at the seemingly ineffective spell, Melanie choked again as the ghast's putrid stench invaded her nostrils. ((Motherf*****! 4th save vs. stench = 2 $#I+ !!!!)) She held her holy symbol up, waving it towards Celebril, hoping to somehow further ward off the evil ghast's dangerous attacks. The young woman bravely attempted to gain control of herself enough to turn him. "Holy Mielikki...*cough*...help me drive this...*choke*...unholy evil...*gag*...back, and save your...*gasp*...faithful follower from death...*cough*...if it be your Divine Will..."
((HP = 62/62 Init. for next round = 8 *sigh* just can't seem to catch a break.))

It seemed that Mielikki was watching the drama, after all. Darien felt a renewed strength and peace flow into him that had nothing to do with his were-form. Or rather, his wereform only enhanced the feeling of divinity...for Darien recognized it as such - his Goddess had heard his plea. The symbol on his back grew warm and the black fur shone with a faint blue radiance. His limbs regained feeling and he was suddenly able to move again! ((God Call successful! YAY!Woo-HOO!RAWR!)) The removal of the paralysis enabled him to gain his feet, and he towered an imposing, full nine feet behind the hideous ghast. He immediately attempted to hug the undead, being wary of the ghast's foul stench. Darien held his breath and tried to squeeze Celebril, locking him into a held position so that Melanie, a cleric of higher favor and rank within the order, could turn him. ((Attack roll to hit: Irony is not co-operating at the moment, so I'm using my black d20 - roll of 14. If you want me to wait and re-do the roll when Irony's working again, let me know.))

Bolstered by the sight of the massive werebear rising behind the undead knight, Melanie did indeed try to turn the ghast. Brandishing her Holy Symbol before her, she drew strength and comfort in her faith to Mielikki, attempting to send the unholy minion back to whatever grave from which he had crawled. "BE GONE!" her voice was loud, but trembled with righteous indignation and fury. The radiant sunburst she held in her hand gathered a golden glow which was becoming brighter by the second. "Stinking, un-natural spawn of evil, you are a disease upon this land, HER land! This land is protected by Holy Mielikki, Mother of the Forests and those within it! Get ye GONE, wretched beast! Back to the filth of hell and grave where you belong! Dare not come slinking from your cess-pool again, vile slave, or you will surely be destroyed! The blessed power of Almighty Mielikki COMMANDS you to be GONE!"

 - - - Prepared to rip the Priestess to bloody shreds, the Undead Knight, despite the furious bloodlust boiling in its dead veins, remains hyper aware of his surroundings, and keenly picks up on Melanie's minutely relieved glance behind him at her felled comrade.  The Ghast whirls about with uncanny speed, and for the barest blink of an eye hesitates before ferociously launching himself at the Werebear.  Cel, like a whirling maelstrom of claws and fangs, savagely attacks Darien once more, but only manages contact with one swipe across his face doing no damage.  The Giant Ursanthrope would've easliy captured the Ghast in an attack from behind, but without surprise on his side, the vile Undead evaded the crushing grasp of his bear hug.  However, the foul corruption could not avoid the Holy Might projected by the Priestess, and issues a blood-chilling scream "Rrrrraaahhh!!!!" of rage and terror that shatters the peaceful quiet of the night.  Unable to withstand the zealous fervor of Melanie, the Ghast, still continuing to howl in fury and alarm, breaks away from the duo, and rapidly flees into the woods toward the Cemetary of Elmshade. - - -

Heaving a tremendous sigh of relief as the ghast fled, Melanie instantly fell to her knees to loudly give thanks. She shut her eyes and reverently held onto her holy symbol like the talisman it was. "Thank you, Holy Mother, for granting us your power to turn back the evil which faced us. Your might and divinity be praised forever. Thank you for watching over us, Mielikki. We are ever in your debt."  She opened her eyes and favored Darien with an apprehensive look, unsure what to say to him. She had heard, of course, about the transformations of those who had been at the Temple Battle, but for the first time in her young life she had no words to express what she was feeling - a combination of awe, nervousness and awkwardness. The priestess stepped forward and hesitantly placed a hand on one of the werebear's massive arms. "You're truly blessed, Brother Darien. Mielikki has shown us both great favor this night, but...I don't think Jarlosh will allow a...a...big bear like you in the Root." Melanie gave him a warm half-smile and waited to see if the bear would speak.

Darien gave a savage roar as the ghast took off, wanting to follow the evil creature and finish him off. His bearish nature urged him to rip and rend, shred the unholy beast into pieces. The only thing which stopped him, was the sound of devout prayer to his Goddess as Melanie's thanks reached his round, fuzzy ears. The blood-lust and rage calmed a little and he found his mind echoing her words. He growled in the ghast's direction, as if to say Cel wasn't worth the effort of chasing him down. His large paws lowered and his human intelligence entered his eyes as he watched Melanie draw close. When she placed a hand on his arm, he simply looked at her and gave a softer whuff of friendship and dropped to all fours, then plopped down in the road near the shop. ((DM call as to how many more rounds he stays in bear-form. I was told to roll a 1d10 when it happened before, so...*shrugs* let me know what you'd like me to do in regards to this - if you need me to roll, I will. Otherwise, I'll let you decide.))
