 Two easily recognized “cherubim?
But The First Kiss is not a painting about angels - it is about the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche.
LEFT:
Psyché et l’Amour, enfants, also known as The First Kiss © William-Adolphe Bougereau, painted sometime between 1873 and 1890 CE, Private Collection, in the public domain - no contact information.
In Ancient Mesopotamia, sherub / shedu / lammasu were depicted in pairs - human-faced with eagle wings, bodies of either lions or bulls, and sometimes with horned headdresses. They were the protective spirits and guardians of buildings, doorways, and sanctuaries. The Hittite griffin and the Egyptian sphinx are considered to be the same concept. Adopted into the Levant religions, Cherubim [Hebrew] became frightening multi-faced warriors that guarded the gates to Eden with flaming swords.
To the evil, cherubim had a horrific aspect and promised terrifying punishment. To the good, cherubim were both gentle-faced and gentle.
Cherubim - during the Renaissance - became confused with putti. Though putti seem “cute?, in truth, they are cunning and clever. The confusion between putti and cherubim are why we no longer perceive them as warriors. Below right is a pair of easily recognized putti.

Two aspects of the Archangel Michael [Christian] - above as a warrior and protector - with two of his symbols - an unsheathed sword and a shield. Below as the arbitrator on Judgement Day, Michael holds the scales of justice.

Michael [detail] from The Last Judgement Polyptych, circa 1446-1452 CE, by Rogier Van der Weyden, , Musée de l’Hotel Dieu[in French, no pictures of the Polyptych], Beaune, France.
The Angel of the Trumpet [or Angel Playing a Flagelot], by Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, circa 1878 CE,Sudley House , Liverpool Museums, England.

Four views of the Archangel Gabriel announcing the Annunciation to Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. Gabriel carries white trumpet lilies - representing both of his best-known symbols: trumpets and lilies. In magic, lilies are associated with water, the Moon, and feminine aspects.

Angels & Angel Spells<o:p></o:p>

Introduction<o:p></o:p>

How Do I Create an Angel Spell?<o:p></o:p>

Invocation and Evocation of Angels<o:p></o:p>

Spirit Guides, Angels, Faeries, and so forth<o:p></o:p>

The Four Archangels<o:p></o:p>

Michael<o:p></o:p>

Gabriel<o:p></o:p>

Raphael<o:p></o:p>

Uriel<o:p></o:p>

Guardian Angels<o:p></o:p>

Angel Spells<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

My favourite angel story is:<o:p></o:p>

“It is said, and it is true, that just before we are born a cavern angel puts his finger to our lips and says, “Hush, don’t tell what you know.?SPAN>  That is why we are born with a cleft on our upper lips remembering nothing of where we came from.?<o:p></o:p>

Prince Ombra, Roderick MacLeish, 1982<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

This legend, too, is attributed to the Archangel Gabriel.  It is Gabriel who determines which souls in heaven will be born onto earth.  Gabriel then spends nine months in the womb teaching the child everything she/he will need to know.  And, just at the point of birth, Gabriel “silences?the child by pressing his finger onto the child's lips, producing the cleft below a person's nose.  The cleft is known as an angel’s kiss.

<o:p> </o:p>

There is probably as much advice, suggestions and ways about how to get in touch with your angels, as there are angels - thousands upon thousands.  Good advice is:

<o:p> </o:p>

“If you really want to see an angel, don’t look for one outside, they reside within…?lt;o:p></o:p>

Angels, An Endangered Species, Malcolm Goodwin, 1990<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

I truly believe that we are born surrounded by angels and both gather and give up angels as we go through our lives - depending on what we are doing at the time, or how old or young we are, or if we are healthy or ill, and so on.  We, also, have more than one guardian angel - real, living people who give us help or advice - those loved ones who have passed on - the biblical archangels Raphael, Michael, Gabriel, and Uriel - as well as all the other angels who reside in heaven.

<o:p> </o:p>

Nevertheless, don’t ever forget to look inside yourself.  That, too, is where many of our angels are, just waiting for us to talk to them, or to listen to them, or to simply enjoy them.

<o:p> </o:p>

One of my favourite movies is Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life?with Jimmy Stewart as the lost soul and Clarence as an inept angel trying to get his wings.  At one point in the movie, Clarence says: “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.?SPAN>  So, please ring a bell.

<o:p> </o:p>

How do I create an Angel Spell?

If you want to create an angel spell, just simply pray to a particular angel or to a group of angels.  Prayer forms a part of all our lives - no matter what religion, culture, or creed we are.  We’ve all, at some point in our lives, said, “Please, God, help me get through this.?SPAN>  Prayer can be informal or formal - whichever is most comfortable for you - personally or in a particular situation.

<o:p> </o:p>

Of course, there’s lots of stuff you can add to angel spells - colours, planets, directions, seasons, symbols, candles, herbs, stones, etc, etc, etc that are associated with various angels.

Evocation and Invocation of Angels

The evocation and invocation of angels is an ethical issue.  My personal recommendation is that you don’t do either.  Why?  Because invocation and evocation can be considered “enslavement?  And, since witches and Wiccans don’t do any harm, well ?!?!?

<o:p> </o:p>

Evocation is used to cause a physical manifestation of an angel so that a summoner can communicate with the angel.  Invocation is used to have an angel enter the summoner’s body directly and through that communicate with the angel.  {It’s easy to see why both could be “dangerous? particularly, invocation.}

<o:p> </o:p>

It’s also easy to see that these kinds of activities intend to “compel?an angel into doing some kind of bidding - in other words, giving control over an angelic body to a human body.  Somehow, I don’t think that’s likely to happen.  Why?  Angels are big, huge, awesome, powerful beings.  Do you really think they’re going to let a human control them?  Not!

<o:p> </o:p>

So, my advice?  Pray to angels - in other words, be polite, be respectful, and ask {nicely, too, will help}.

<o:p> </o:p>

Spirit Guides, Angels, Faeries, and so forth

There are enough people that think spirit guides, angels, and faeries are not one and the same.  As far as I’m concerned, angels, spirit guides, faeries, and all similar things are all the same.  Yes, they all have different ways about them and have arisen from different cultures.  But, I feel that the principles that these beings are and can give are the same.

<o:p> </o:p>

They can take you on journeys that are not the same as everyday living.  They can inspire you to the nth degree.  They can give you succour, advice, comfort, joy, and so many other things.  Angels - whatever form they take - are wondrous and totally awesome.

<o:p> </o:p>

The word angel comes from the Greek angelos meaning messenger.  {Great definition!}

<o:p> </o:p>

The Four Archangels

Descriptions of the Archangels are very confusing and overlapping.  Legends and stories can be applied to one angel and then in the next breath to one of the archangels.  Even the number of archangels as well as their names cause disagreement amongst scholars.  Apparently, just like the Planetary Angels, there are supposed to be seven Archangels.  Nevertheless, there are four Archangels who are almost always agreed upon - Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel.

<o:p> </o:p>

Like pentagrams, Angels did not originate with the Judeo-Christian-Islamic faiths.  Angels originated with the Sumerians - the first people to create a civilization in the Western world - {Mesopotamia, Tigris/Euphrates river valleys, modern day <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Iraq</st1:place></st1:country-region>, at least as early as 5000 BCE}.  So, our modern day angels are adopted just like faeries, spirit guides, animal guides, etc, etc.

<o:p> </o:p>

Michael, in the Judeo-Christian-Islamic faiths, is the foremost of the archangels and the angels.  He is a great warrior  and leads God’s armies against Satan.  His name means "who is as God" or “who is like to God?  He both fought against and chained Satan during the War.  Michael, too, is the Angel of Death since he will weigh the souls on Judgment Day.  God put Michael in charge of nature, rain, snow, thunder, lightning, wind, and clouds.  {In Islam, Michael ?Mikal means rain.}  Michael is a great protector, an impassioned defender against adversity, and a champion of peace.  He, also is an angel of repentance, mercy, righteousness, and brings the gift of patience.  In Islam, Michael’s wings are emerald green with saffron hairs that contain a million faces and mouths, which speak in a million dialects.

<o:p> </o:p>

Michael is considered the patron saint of grocers, sailors and mariners, paratroopers, and policemen and policewomen.  Too, he is the <st1:place w:st="on">Archangel</st1:place> of protection, peace, courage, mercy, patience, careers, achievements, mental powers, and motivation.  Michael also rules abundance, money, and growth.

Michael rules the Sun, east, the season of summer, the element of earth, and Sundays and Thursdays.  Michael’s colours are all the yellows, golds, and browns though violet and white are used.  Michael’s stone {metal} is gold.  Michael’s symbols are an unsheathed sword, a shield, and the scales of justice.

<o:p> </o:p>

Gabriel, the second highest-ranking archangel, is the bearer of many messages {known, hidden, and secret}.  Gabriel is considered gentler than Michael is.  Gabriel’s name means “Man of God? “God has shown himself mightily? and “God is my strength?  In Islam, Gabriel {Jibril} dictated the Koran to the Prophet Muhammad.  Gabriel was the messenger of the Annunciation to Mary, telling her of the coming birth of Jesus Christ.  {Ditto to Zacharias about John, the Baptist [his son].}  Gabriel is also associated with the foretelling of future events to Daniel; possibly the angel that destroyed <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Sodom</st1:place></st1:City> and Gommorah; and the giver of succour to Christ during the Crucifixion.  Another story {originating in <st1:place w:st="on">Babylonia</st1:place>} is that once Gabriel fell from grace with God because he was reluctant to follow an order.  He obeyed the order but got the slowest angel in Heaven to carry out the task.  Finally, though, because Gabriel was excellent at giving good advice, he was admitted back into the graces of God.  It is Gabriel who will blow the horn announcing the second coming of Christ.

<o:p> </o:p>

Gabriel is the patron saint of communications, telecommunication, and postal workers.  He is the <st1:place w:st="on">Archangel</st1:place> of annunciation {birth}, humanity, resurrection, mercy, revelation, truth, justice, and hope.  He is a bringer of news and “heralds the revealing of answers?  Gabriel is also associated with various forms of magic: alchemy, intuition, psychic gifts, clairvoyance, scrying, astral travel, and herbal medicine.  He is the <st1:place w:st="on">Archangel</st1:place> most associated with women, births,  and female cycles.

<o:p> </o:p>

Gabriel rules the Moon, west, the season of winter, the element of water, and Mondays.  Gabriel's colours are silver, white, blue, rose, orange, and scarlet.  His stone is the moonstone.  Gabriel’s symbols are a trumpet and a lily.

<o:p> </o:p>

Raphael - his name means “God has healed?or “God heals?  Raphael heals  diseases, wounds, people, and also the planet Earth - it is his most important charge.  Raphael oversees the evening winds - usually as gentle as Raphael is considered.  He is charged with protecting the young, the innocent, and travellers.  One legend associated with Raphael is that of Tobias - Raphael protected Tobias on his travels, instructed Tobias in medicine, drove out an evil spirit from Tobias?wife, and brought joy to Tobias?father.  In the Book of Solomon, Raphael gives a ring to Solomon that helps him complete the building of the temple.  Raphael is credited with teaching Noah how to construct the <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Ark.</st1:place></st1:State>  And, in his role as a healer, Raphael helps to ease the pain of Abraham after his circumcision and heals Jacob after Jacob wrestles with another angel.  Raphael also helped to heal the Earth after the War in Heaven.

<o:p> </o:p>

Raphael is the patron saint of the blind, science, teaching, medicine, all medical workers, and travelers.  He is the <st1:place w:st="on">Archangel</st1:place> of prayer, love, happy meetings, healing, joy and light, science, wisdom, knowledge, rebirth. Raphael rules contracts, lawsuits, and legal trials as well as business, and buying and selling.

<o:p> </o:p>

Raphael rules over Mercury, south, the season of spring, the element of fire, and Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Raphael's colours are yellow, orange, white, gray, black, and indigo.  His stones are quicksilver {mercury} and aluminum.  Raphael’s symbol is a pilgrim’s staff.

<o:p> </o:p>

Uriel is not mentioned by name in the Bible but is found in rabbinical texts.  His name means “God is my Light?or “Fire of God?  He could very well have been the “dark?angel who wrestled with Jacob.  Uriel is, like Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, a guardian of God’s throne.  He is considered one of the most faithful and dedicated members of all the angels. Uriel, too, was placed in charge of Tartarus {Hell, Hades} and guards the Gates of Eden.  Uriel was the angel messenger sent by God to warn Noah about the flood.  In rabbinical thought, it is believed that Uriel gave the Kabbalah to humans.  In 745 CE, sadly, Uriel was removed from church records when the Catholic Church became overly concerned about the prominence of angels with the general public.

<o:p> </o:p>

Uriel is best known for helping us turn disappointments into blessings.  He is the <st1:place w:st="on">Archangel</st1:place> of salvation, devotion, ministration, peace, balanced judgement, and enlightenment.  Being the “sharpest-eyed?angel of the entire heavenly host, Uriel can be asked for help with mental clarity.  Like Gabriel, Uriel is associated with some of the “paranormal??magic, alchemy, cosmic consciousness, and astrology.

<o:p> </o:p>

Uriel rules over Uranus but is also closely related to Venus, both south and east, the season of autumn, the element of air, and Mondays and Wednesdays.  Uriel’s colours are violet, white, blue, silver, indigo, and rainbow.  Uriel's symbol is an open hand holding a flame.

<o:p> </o:p>

Guardian Angels

Personally, I don’t think it’s hard to get in touch with your own guardian angels.  Why?

<o:p> </o:p>

Because I truly believe that all of my guardian angels - besides the “Guardian?angels of the heavenly hosts - are the people who have passed before me - my grandparents, my great grandparents, other relatives, and some of my friends.  Anytime I need them, I just simply “talk?to them or think of them or even just look at a picture of them.  Try it.  You’ll probably quite pleasantly surprise yourself at how easy it really is and how much comfort it will bring.
