(by Joshua Shapiro, the Crystal Skull Explorer) Today the topic of quartz crystals is a hot item! You will find books about crystals in almost every bookstore (even non- metaphysical ones). There is a great battle occurring between holistic doctors/healers and the traditional medical profession about whether crystals can actually be effective in facilitating some form of healing. However, the intention of this article is to go beyond what has been publicly shared on this topic and discuss one of the most amazing uses of quartz by the ancients -- the Crystal Skulls. Ancient skulls What are we referring to when we say a Crystal Skull? A Crystal Skull is a piece of quartz crystal shaped in the form (or approximating that) of a human skull. There are two types of skulls that exist, those which have been carved in a known process by modern-day craftsmen, thus these are called contemporary skulls and others which have been discovered in or near ancient ruins, known as old or ancient crystal skulls. The most interesting of these skulls are the ancients one which are human size or larger. In working with these ancient crystal skulls, we find an incredible energy generally linked to the artifact and many strange physical phenomena. The places where the human sized ancient crystal skulls have been found in are predominately various ruins (Mayan, Aztec, etc ....) in Mexico or Central America with unsupported rumors of some skulls being discovered in South America. Recently, other crystal skulls have been uncovered in other parts of the world as well. Thus far, four types of ancient quartz skulls are known including clear quartz, amethyst (purple), rose quartz (pink) and smoky quartz (from grey to black). The contemporary carved Crystal Skulls are being manufactured in Brazil, China, the United States, Mexico and Germany and there are many local crystal stores which sell some of these skulls as well. The ancient skulls not only have baffled our scientists (when a skull was available for research) regarding how they were made, but they have a great deal of psychic phenomena that occur around them. For example, several of ancient skulls have been brought to Hewlett-Packard, located in the San Francisco area. Hewlett- Packard (HP), long known as a manufacturer of printers and computer systems, has one of the most extensive scientific and crystal research laboratories in the world. The scientist working at HP, who had a chance to work with some of these ancient crystal skulls were hard pressed to explain how a primitive culture could have carved crystal into such precise shapes and especially against the natural axis of the crystal without the use of sophisticated tools. Carving Crystal is a substance that has a perfect symmetry of alignment on a molecular level. When a carver cuts crystal, if they attempt to carve against this axis, the crystal begins to shatter. Even with the elaborate laser equipment that is available today, it would be very difficult to manufacture such a Crystal Skull that is so precise and fashioned against the natural symmetry of the crystal. Of course, this does not even begin to address the strange psychic phenomena that has been recorded that occurs in the presence of an ancient Crystal Skull. A Brief Summary of known Ancient/Old Crystal Skulls There is no known process that can date a crystal skull. Carbon 14 dating works only on organic substances of which quartz crystal is not. Therefore, so far, one of the main ways to identify the older crystal skulls is to work with trained sensitives as well as observe people's experiences in the presence of a crystal skull. Alternatively, another method is look closely at the surface of the quartz for tool marks (using a high powered microscope) which is found in all the modern skulls that are carved today. If a large majority of the sensitives working with a particular crystal skull feels to be very old (could be a thousand or more years old), then we generally believe that this could be an ancient crystal skull. Also we consider the legends around the skulls as well or how powerfully they energetically affect people who touch them. Another good source in determing the age is to work with indigenous elders if they are open to do so and share their information. We are hoping in the future to come up with a better system to be able to classify and rate each new crystal skull that appears as well as develop more precise ways of testing. |

The Anna Mitchell-Hedges Skull
was discovered in British Honduras in 1927 | | The discovery of this baffling artifact is a controversial matter. It was brought into prominence by British explorer F. A. Mitchell-Hedges, who claimed that his daughter unearthed it in 1924. Mitchell-Hedges led an expedition in the ancient Mayan ruins of Lubaantun, in Belize (then British Honduras), searching for evidence of Atlantis. 
The story goes that his daughter, Anna, was rummaging inside a structure believed to have once been a temple, when she found the beautifully carved cranium of the crystal skull. It was lacking its jawbone, but the matching mandible was found three months later, some 25 feet away from the first discovery. Mitchell-Hedges claimed that he refused to take the skull away, and offered it to the local priests, but the Mayans gave the skull back to him as a gift upon his departure. It now appears that this tale of the skull's discovery was entirely fabricated. Mitchell-Hedges apparently purchased the skull at an auction at Sothebys in London, in 1943. This has been verified by documents at the British Museum, which had bid against Mitchell-Hedges for the crystal artifact. This revelation is consistent with the known history of Mitchell-Hedges's involvement with the skull. There are no photographs of the skull among those that were taken during his Lubaatun expedition, and there is no documentation of Mitchell-Hedges displaying or even acknowledging the skull prior to 1943. The skull remains in the possession of the octogenarian Anna Mitchell-Hedges. She resides in Canada and displays the skull on frequent tours. Anna has maintained for all these years that she discovered the skull, even though there is reason to doubt that she was present at the Lubaatun expedition at all. The Mitchell-Hedges skull is made of clear quartz crystal, and both cranium and mandible are believed to have come from the same solid block. It weighs 11.7 pounds and is about five inches high, five inches wide, and seven inches long. Except for slight anomalies in the temples and cheekbones, it is a virtually anatomically correct replica of a human skull. Because of its small size and other characteristics, it is thought more closely to resemble a female skull -- and this has led some to refer to the Mitchell-Hedges skull as a "she." The Mitchell-Hedges family loaned the skull to Hewlett-Packard Laboratories for extensive study in 1970. Art restorer Frank Dorland oversaw the testing at the Santa Clara, California, computer equipment manufacturer, a leading facility for crystal research. The HP examinations yielded some startling results. Researchers found that the skull had been carved against the natural axis of the crystal. Modern crystal sculptors always take into account the axis, or orientation of the crystal's molecular symmetry, because if they carve "against the grain," the piece is bound to shatter -- even with the use of lasers and other high-tech cutting methods. To compound the strangeness, HP could find no microscopic scratches on the crystal which would indicate it had been carved with metal instruments. Dorland's best hypothesis for the skull's construction is that it was roughly hewn out with diamonds, and then the detail work was meticulously done with a gentle solution of silicon sand and water. The exhausting job -- assuming it could possibly be done in this way -- would have required man-hours adding up to 300 years to complete. Under these circumstances, experts believe that successfully crafting a shape as complex as the Mitchell-Hedges skull is impossible; as one HP researcher is said to have remarked, "The damned thing simply shouldn't be." The British Crystal Skull and the Paris Crystal Skull There is a pair of similar skulls known as the British Crystal Skull and the Paris Crystal Skull. Both are said to have been bought by mercenaries in Mexico in the 1890s, possibly at the same time. They are so similar in size and shape that some have guessed that one was copied to produce the other. In comparison to the Mitchell-Hedges skull, they are made of cloudier clear crystal and are not nearly as finely sculpted. The features are superficially etched and appear incomplete, without discretely formed jawbones. The British Crystal Skull is on display at London's Museum of Mankind, and the Trocadero Museum of Paris houses the Paris Crystal Skull.

It is my personal belief that the true understanding of the ancient crystal skulls can be found within various traditions of the indigenous cultures that exist in our world. In particular, there is a definite connection with the crystal skulls with the Mayans and the Aztecs, and there is even information coming from various Native American sources that they know about the skulls as well. In most cases, the crystal skulls are linked to sacred world prophecies held by these people.
Also if such cultures have their own crystal skulls (which seems very likely) they are protecting and guard these skulls in secret as they consider these artifacts very sacred and take the responsibility to hold them very seriously. To determine what type of crystal skull one might have, either we can go by the Legends of the Indigenous People who have them, or by working with trained sensitives who can psychically link into the energy and history of the skull. |

Has Any Research Been Done to Understand the Skulls? Yes indeed, there has been some interesting conducted by the Crystal Skull Society International in California, headed by crystal skull expert, F. R. “Nick�?Nocerino for almost 60 years. Additionally, in 2001, a group of us formed the World Mystery Research Center (based in the U.S. and Holland) where we began to focus on two aspect related to the crystal skulls: | 1. To use various electronic devices to see if we could provide some proof and understanding why the energy or presence of a crystal skull is affecting people in such a powerful manner (and our blind test showed us this was indeed occurring using such devices as meridian based machines, EEG, lecher antenna and Krilian machines sensitive to recording and displaying the Aura. 2. We also discovered secret codes contained within the crystal skulls in the form of images that came out using a special process of analysis using scanned images of the crystal skulls (reversal images that was developed by the Mayans) and very importantly, the Bible Code (secret information encoded within the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament by a numerical skipping of letters) conclusively discusses the crystal skulls, their link to the Mayans, Prophecy, speaks about the Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull, their ability to work as a computer and for healing. |

Edgar Cayce One of the most detailed descriptions of the Atlantean use of a mysterious instrument called the Great Crystal was given by Edgar Cayce, who mentioned it many times. The crystal, he said was housed in a special building oval in shape, with a dome that could be rolled back, exposing the Crystal to the light of the sun, moon and stars at the most favorable time. The interior of the building was lined with non-conducting metal or stone, similar to asbestos or bakelite, a thermosetting plastic. The Crystal itself, the Tuaoi Stone, or Firestone, was huge in size, cylindrical in length, and prismatic in shape, cut with six sides. Atop the crystal was a moveable capstone, used to both concentrate incoming rays of energy, and to direct currents to various parts of the Atlantean countryside. It appears that the Crystal gathered solar, lunar, stellar, atmospheric and Earth energies as well as unknown elemental forces and concentrated these at a specific point, located between the top of the Crystal and the bottom of the capstone. The energy was used for various purposes. In the beginning it was used as purely a spiritual tool by initiates who could handle the great energy. The early Atlanteans were peaceful people. As they developed more physical material bodies, they used the crystal to rejuvenate their bodies and were able to live hundreds of years while maintaining a youthful appearance. Later the Great Crystal was put to other uses. Currents of energy were transmitted throughout the land, like radio waves, and powered by these, crafts and vehicles traversed the land, through the sky and under the sea at the speed of sound. By utilization of other currents originating from the Great Crystal, the Atlanteans were also able to transmit over great distances the human voice, and pictures, like modern television. In the same manner, even heat and light could be directed to specific buildings or open arenas, giving illumination and warmth by seemingly invisible means. In this timeline, in the Bermuda Triangle, on the ocean bottom where the ruins of Atlantis now exist, the energy build-up in the sunken and damaged Fire Crystals can periodically trigger materialization of anything. | |
