Hi all, sorry I havent posted much lately, but my memory and timing has gone to hell.  The last time i went to see my neuro, he told me that because  I've had so many seizures in the last few months, that my brain cells were burnt out. At first I thought he was kidding me, but he assured me he wasnt.  I dont even like to think of it because it makes me too depressed. My spelling has gone down the tubes, and sometimes i cant even remember how to spell simple words right. This morning, I was trying to remember a friends last name who i have known for over 27 years and couldnt think of it.
Anyway, i hope you are all doing fine, and welcome all of you new members to the group.
        Deek.

First off, DON'T PANIC.

Second, try not to get super depressed. I know, from experience, that when you are having memory problems and get depressed it makes it worse. I don't know why - maybe someday they'll do research and be able to tell us.

Third, don't try too hard. It's like trying to start your car when she's being bull-headed. If you crank it too many times, you just flood the engine or run down the battery. But if you let your mind rest, and try a little bit at a time, things will try to come back. It will take a long time. A lot of things might not come back at all. Faces, dates, numbers - those are all going to be the worst. You will KNOW you know someone or something, but there won't be any way for you to know how. A lot of the time even when they tell you who they are, it will mean nothing to you. It's like explaining the color 'blue' to a person that has been blind all their life. They can understand cold, but not blue.

The thing you are going to have to do is going to be the one you hate the most. You are going to have to take inslow.

Hi Deek. Memory loss is one of my bigest frustrations after a seizure. I actually got myself into a small panic when I looked into my closet and saw two sweaters hanging there. I couldn't remember ever buying them and I didnt want to ask my daughter...I get nervous she'll ship me off to a home!  I showed her the sweaters and she laughed 'mom I gave those to you a few days before your seizure' thank God for her.  I do two things that help me now. I keep a daily journal of anything important I do because I KNOW I wont remenber it after a seizure and dont want to torture myself trying to remember something that wont come to mind. Also, a sense of humor about this helps. Yesterday my caseworker came over to help me organize paperwork for my upcoming recert for HUD.  I proudly showed her my new envelope that I keep all my medical receipts in. she thought this was a great idea and I pulled the receipts out to show her...only the receipts were about two years old..I knew I had put them aside. Instead of getting upset I went through and showed her some of the other papers I needed and underneath was another envelope with all the receipts I needed. I alughed and told her 'my other personality put these in here!  we laughed. I am fortunate to have people around me with a good sense of humor. when I do get down on myself they assure me this is temporary but I do understand the frustration. I remember one of the first things my neuro told me was not to get upset about forgetting things in shrt term memory 'chances are you dont need or want to remember them anyway'  easy for him to say but he is right!  Relax. I found a music station that plays earth sounds and its very relaxing.  also, I have been getting bookd on CD's when I can get to the library, which is not often.  the librarian told me if I ever need the books or CD's longer its fine.  Lori

Hey Baby,

It's natural for this to happen. Dom's skills have regressed because of the seizures. So what do you do? Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start over! Believe it or not, when I get a migraine, I can't think either. Hey I called you the other day! You haven't called me back!! I see how you are! LOL

Love ya hun,

Sam I am

Don't feel bad. First of all I have a terrible short term memory due to my epilepsy. I do my best to respond to the messages after I come home from work on the weekdays and then on the weekends whenever like now. We just appreciate your participation and know you're here. Thanks for posting.

My memory's been getting a lot worse lately, too. I have been attributing it to my shock treatments way back when I lost my son 15 years ago...because it destroyed my short-term memory capabilities....but now that I started having seizures....and many of them per day lately, my memory is steadily getting worse. It's like my brain is just fried all the time now.

Marj.

Hi Marj; I have a question, when someone get a shock treatment, doesnt that put you in a seizure ?
BTW   I started writing things down of what happened during the day (important things any way) so that I remember to do things. It really seems to be helping. But I still having trouble remembering the names of people I know, but havent seen in a few years. I see their face in my mind, but cant for the life of me ,put a name to it.    I had another seizure last friday and im pretty sure I cracked a rib. I came to on my bedroom floor with my dog licking my face.

Used to it did cause you to have a massive convulsion. Now, the way that it happens, they use much less energy, and research which area of the brain needs the stimulus. I have heard that some persons black out, and many have a problem with their memory for a period of time, but no differently than after a seizure. So, they have drastically revised how it's done, and they no longer do it like 'One Flew Over The Cookoo's nest".
