Hi guys.  As I pased my one year mark in march, I am realizing more triggers for seizures.  My biggest is light flashes. Last night I went to the movies with my daughter.  Everyone ususally turns off their phone but a few kids around me were texting each other.  this didn;t bother me except for a few rows ahead about 10 oclock from where I was sitting..every time this kid sent a text the flash got my attention and I flinched.  People think being loud or just having their phones ring is a distrubance but don't realize other things can as well. I nicely motioned for the young man to come over. He looked nervous and I told him everything was ok but explained how the flashed were triggering my brain.  the kids seemed very interested and said they would not do that again in a dark room.  they had no idea and were just having fun but hopefully the next person with epilepsy in the theatre won't be bothered by the flashes. still learning guys.  Lori

That's very interesting that you mentioned this. I noticed the other day on my drive to class, I had a migraine all day and couldn't miss class, that the wipers seemed to bother me really bad. It was raining and having them go back and forth really bothered me. I had to put them on a slower setting in order for me to drive. I keep asking my neuro about some sort of connection between seizures and migraines. I've had one every day this week. Yeah I get where you are coming from Lori. I would too be distracted by lights in a dark place. That would be irritating to me as well. I'm glad you didn't have a seizure in the movie theatre. : )

Me too Sam! Certain motion bothers me as well but I don't realize the new ones until they happen. The light from the text message I don't think would have bothered me during the day..Im not sure. There were other kids texting but only the kid sitting at that angel made my brain twinge when he sent the message. I've noticed that looking at pictures on the computer in rapid succession bothers me no matter what time of day. I also notice that before a seizure I get ?cranky/aggitated...not sure what that is about but it is a warning sign for me but its on my list of things to be aware of.  I think certain things trigger each of us and the neuro may not be aware of everything because we are all different with types of seizures and triggers. Thanks for your e mail. take care. Lori

This is interesting that you would bring up that you say that you have the problem with the flashes and when say a "theatre" or a big room. I say this 'cause I think it is strange that I always seem to be dizzy in church on Sunday morning. I have told my doctor many times, he would not know why always the same day. Of course we know all the meds. have that side effect it's just that we don't understand why it is only Sunday. Then now that you say it is this type of room I think it might be due to being in a large room and then looking up at the screen for the words to sing for the songs and then when they change the words on the screen that is kinda a little flash I would say. Wouldn't you? This will be interesting to see your response now. Thanks for the first post.

Hi Jana. I am learning new triggers as my first year of living with seizures has past.  Light definitely triggers me and I wouldn't doubt that the lights in church, IE light reflected thru the glass windows at an angle can be a trigger for you as well.  I doubt I would have noticed this in the daylight but am unsure if this would have triggered me or not.  I watched the CMA awards tonight when someonw was singing the lights in the background brightly flashed with the music my daughter saw me jump.  I felt it but didn't realize I had jumped. Doctors dont always have all the answers...we need to fill them in when we can! take care.  Lori

I found out that migraines are very much related to epilepsy...in fact, it's a mild form of epilepsy...so naturally, it's more common for us to have both epilepsy and migraines. Yes, I have PSE...and there are so many visual triggers that send my brain spinning....lights, colors, movements....it's really hard for others to understand. I've been called a liar, and crazy....not everyone who has epilepsy will have PSE (photosensitive epilepsy)....so even some of those who have epilepsy don't believe me...until they become sensitive themselves.

Marj.
