HI Everyone,
I have a question about seizures and puberty. Dom is 9 going on 10, he'll be 10 next month. Does puberty make the seizures increase? He woke up at 7 a.m., which is later than usual, went to the living room, sat on the couch and peed. When I realized what he had done, he was walking around the house naked. I wasn't awake fully. I asked him where his clothes were and he said he wet them. Today he was playing on the computer and he wet himself again. I'm wondering if he's having seizures without me catching it. I can't get into the neuro until the 17th. His behavior is getting worse. He hasn't bounced back from April's seiuzres. Now it's June!
Thanks,
Sam I am |

Sam,
Mine did. I only had absence seizures until I hit puberty. We didn't even realize what was happening at the time. I began having small 'blackouts' about 8 months after my first period. I was 11. I was also the biggest girl on the block, and told everyone else - including my sis - that I'd beat them silly if they told the folks. (Both were severely ill at the time.) I had my first convulsion July 30, 1972. While I was unconscious, the gang told mom everything.
MOST epileptics can be controlled, if you can only find the right combination of medicines. The problem is finding that combination, when his body is starting to go thru so many changes so quickly. I know it's hard to get in to see the neurologist, but have you really sat down with the doctor and told him everything that's happening, since April? You need to. Write it all down, and keep a journal of each event from now on - what time of day it happens, did anything precede it, did he act peculiarly afterward - everything! You never know what might be the key to what is happening to Dom.
We're all here for you, and if you need to talk, my email is [email protected].
Yours,
Milinda

I have to say yes. Due to my experience. When I look at my seizure log I would always have my seizure log right before having my periods 'til we got my medications more under control. I seem to be doing better now though. Jana |

That's what hubby and I are wondering, if he's going into puberty now and this change is increasing his seizures and it's possible that he's having more without my knowledge. Whatever is happening is really setting him off. Yesterday morning he had melted down (severe tantrum) because there were no clean sweat pants for him to wear. I had shorts but he didn't want to wear them. I ended up taking him to 4 different stores before I found shorts made of the same material as sweat pants. Never did find sweat pants.
Well, gotta get kids off to school.
Thanks for your input,

Sorry to hear you are going through this. If he is going to have these kind of stages I would make sure that 'til you can figure out some kind of calendar/ log of when this will be happening to him make him wear "Depends". Also if you can't find sweat pants at the malls try an athletic type store. I really hope that the doctors can work things out for him and find the right kind of medication, have him be a candidate for surgery and maybe have a surgery hopefully work out for him. I totally understand what he is going through, not with wetting my pants but you saying that it's only happening monthly. I used to have 1-4 right before having my periods. Then after having the Vagus Nerve Stimulator implanted and after that working with the medications and coming up with a good mix to control the seizures I seem to be doing better since being put on the Lyrica and having my Zonegran increased. I also had a big surgery in '92. That surgery was on the rt. side of the brain but I still have activity on the left side so the VNS and meds are to help with the left side. Best thing you can do is make sure you are keeping a good journal for your doctor of the seizures and following instruction. Jana |
