Dr. Johnson's Choice

 
Makes 1.7 litres (3 pints).
 
INGREDIENTS: Red wine - 700ml (1 pint), Sugar cubes - 12, Cloves - 6, Boiling water - 600ml (1 pint), Orange liqueur - 150ml (5 fl oz), Brandy - 150ml (5 fl oz), optional, Grated nutmeg - sprinkle.
 
COOKING: 1. Heat the wine, sugar and cloves together until almost boiling. Pour in the boiling water.
2. Add the orange liqueur and the optional brandy. Pour into heat-proof glasses and sprinkle with nutmeg.
