Not long ago, I was in a discussion with an avowed atheist who said in no uncertain terms "all science proves that there is no God". We had no argument, but I did try to get an explanation of the "all science" bit. No luck.

Perhaps someone here can enlighten me on the statement's meaning.

oc..

My delete.

Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin are both buried in Westminster Abbey.
Perhaps, but did they have any say in the matter? I haven't read anywhere that they expressed any such desire. Meanwhile, people sunc as Galileo and Da Vinci were persecuted by religion.

The "science" getting a well-deserved "bad rap" is what has been called "real science", that is to say the kind which involves invoking "real scientists" with impressive credentials rather than offering evidence.  Since it is easy to attract "credentialed" "scientists" willing to testify (or remain mute) for money or flattery, all such scholasticism risks falling into prostitution.

Science based on observation, experiment, and evidence is sometimes confused with the dirty kind but really is its antithesis.

My delete as well. I answered the question you deleted. I really don't know if they expressed a desire, but I doubt it. Maybe the church thought that if they buried them in Westminster Abbey it would seem as though they came to their religious senses?

Well, I'm off to school so have a good day Oscar.

Science isn't concerned with God.

God is a concept in religion and philosophy. In religion, one develops a faith or belief in systems that provide explanation or comfort, without dependency on evidence and proof.

Science is a system of measurement and description that is not concerned with comfort, or anthropomorphic interpretations, and demands hypothesis, evidence, and if possible, proof.

It never ceases to amaze me, what a colossal waste of time, energy, and resources is dedicated toward demands for inclusion of creation in science, and in particular biology, by the ignorant who fail to understand, and resist being educated, that one is science, the other philosophy, and both are valid in education; but not in the same class! These are different subjects, just like math and history. Put them where they belong, and be done with it!

Life is all one text.  I resist the notion of exclusion at all...if one is religious, then one Cannot help but interpret life (even science) through those ideals, philosophies, etc (whatever they may be).  Likewise, if one is a-religious (and often I find a-religious people as sanctimonious in their attitudes as zealots) his/her views are as influenced by said convictions as anyone else's.

I shall scream it:

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS OBJECTIVITY...from my point of view

And of course quantum mechanics agrees with you, Jen. One rule of qm is that to measure something is to change it.

"THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS OBJECTIVITY"
How about subjectivity, Jen?

Right on Belle, and of course you are aware that is one reason many measurements are made indirectly.

I'll give that there can be honest attempts at objectivity, or at least the recognition of all the factors that influence judgement; however, I will hold firm that anyone who insists that s/he is 100% objective is delusional.  Or at the very least grossly mistaken...hehehe

Now you know why I don't give a crap whether there is a god or gods or not.

Pikes is right. Science is not interested in proving god exists or doesn't exist one way or the other. It is simply not part of their discipline.

What science has shown {quite by accident} is God is not always necessary to explain the universe. That frightens some, enlightens others, confused a few and delights many. All human discoveries about God must please him. Don't you think?

Rose, I'll be long dead when the cosmic science finds some answers to before the big bang. It just may be that a God will be found there. I really don't give much of a hoot about the bang itself or thereafter insofar as god/no god thingy goes.

oc...BTW, it is a real pleasure to know you Rose. I do value your posts and opinions.
