we visited a church. I noted that the well decorated tree was referred to as a Christmas Tree. Also, I noted a symbol of the usa (flag). Wouldn't you think that in 2008 the people there in would know that it is a Holiday tree and that there is a constitutional separation of church and state.
oc...should we go back?? |

Was that church owned, built, maintained and financed by the state (taxpayers)? |

No churches in this country are owned, built, maintained or financed by the state. But then I think you knew that, Oskar. Enjoy the church festivity, OC. g/v |

We visited church yesterday (Sat,) The official Church of England. We did not worry about faith (we are both atheists) or anything else much as we enjoyed a concert performed by a local brass band and organised by the parishioners as their contribution to our towns Winter Festival day. We chatted to the priest and enjoyed a cup of tea and a home baked scone. As we did so I was looking round at the old place and thinking that in its 900 years history it has seen a few changes not least the change from being Catholic to Protestant and then the puritanical excesses of Cromwell. Past vicars have never ceased to bemoan the sheer indifference of the towns population to religion and they are correct. Yet when the old place suffered a terrible fire in 1960 the whole town rallied to have it restored. The Communist Corner of our local pub also threw coins into the collecting bucket. When I teased them about this one old guy fixed me with a stare and a grin and said " want somewhere fitting for the start of my last journey" Perhaps my town has it about right. |

"No churches in this country are owned, built, maintained or financed by the state." What about the National Cathedral in Washington, DC? |

The church has adopted dozens of pagan rituals and symbols over the years to make people who have been converted comfortable with Christianity. Today, it's called a contemporary service. I celebrate Christmas and have a Christmas Tree. I celebrate Valentines day and Halloween. All are filled based on pagan rituals. The only holiday that everyone can celebrate without something tied to it is Thanksgiving. You can be thankful for you life without involving God. |

I looked around the national cathedral's website and found out that Darth Vader is carved into one of the towers. Very Strange, but very cool. |
