I once read that electric chairs have three switches. Two are dummies, and one is live. A firing squad has seven guns. Six with bullets, and one with a blank. This is done to make each person who pulls the switch or the trigger think that they aren't the one who actually killed the person.
If the truth be known, most soldiers I know are haunted by the people they killed in the name of war. I've met many over the years. They hated what they did, but did it because it was their job.
As humans, we look for a leader. If that leader tells us to do something unethical and we will be held blameless, most of the human race will comply. We are all heartless savages with a thin veil of common decency. Put anyone in a situation where the fight or flight instincts come in to play, put someone they love in danger, and they will fight to the death.
As for the leader issue, think about the laws that govern us. Do you break the ones that you disagree with? Why not? We need some type of authority to function. We need someone to answer to. Without authority, we'd kill one another to get the things we need or want.
People without that need for authority become leaders like Sadam and Bin Lauden. Probably spelled them wrong, but you know who I mean. Think about the people that killed for Charlie Manson. Manson could have been the next Hitler if he had been in any type of power position.
