Just returned from seeing a fantastic movie - Sergei Bodrov's Mongol.

This is an epic account of the early life of Genghis Khan, filmed on the Mongolian steppes where he lived his early life. It's an eye-popping spectacle at times, where the beauty of the landscape is just captivating.

Temudgin's complicated relationship with his blood-brother Jamukha, and his loving relationship with his wife Borte, are the central themes of the film. Temudgin is a defenceless child hunted by rivals of his father, who survives to become a strong warrior. His early life is full of adversity, even slavery, but he rises above this to become the warlord of all the Mongols.

Bodrov has cast superb actors as his three leads, especially Khulun Chuluun as Borte. He gets superb performances form them, especially from Asano Tadanobu as the young Temudgin, who gives a superb portrayal of the incipient warlord the child will become.

Mongol is a superb film, an epic on the grand scale. It's the first of a trilogy. The second ought to be a ripper, as Genghis leads his hordes to conquer half the known world - that ought to be the horse opera to end them all!

Thanks for the insight. I've not heard of it. Hollywood made a movie many years ago about the rise of Ghengis, much in the same manner. An epic story can be retold and retooled, and remain fresh for the inspiration it is.

I saw this movie and really liked it!  Many of those things I did not know about Ghengis Khan, it gave a really good insight to his life.
