The repairs to our computer did not "take." It's 7 years old and advice around us is not to try to fix a computer after 5 years old. We have advice (lots) that if we get a new Dell, to have Vista taken off since it's a terrible system and have WindowsXP put in (however you do that!) Also, not to buy "Home Edition" but get the "Professional Edition." Now DH is totally taking over and wants to spend the bucks to buy a MacIntosh. I'm scared of the new configuration but willing to learn. I understand it will take WindowsXP work with no trouble. I hope I can post this before I crash!!! Shirl Thanks for the advice! |

I found a place that would let me pick Vista or XP and they build the computer. Supposedly Microsoft will have another new operating system out in 2010. I have not heard good things about Vista, but I have heard it is expensive to have it removed and XP put on. You might want to try Vista first and see if it is manageable for you. I used Mac as a teacher, and it is good, but quite different. That has been 6 years so I do not know how they have changed it. I do know Mac is expensive. I guess my advice would be to weigh all your options. I just had to take mine in, and it is at least 5 years old, but they got it fixed. If you stay with Vista you ought to be able to get a pretty nice set up for under $500 and then if you do not like Vista you can take it in and pay to have it removed and XP put on. Some people like Vista. I am one of those people who has never spent big bucks for a computer. I have a Compaq which is a division of HP and it has been great. I personally would not get an E-machine and the tech who worked on mine said Dell is making it so only Dell can fix their own computers. I hope this did not make your deciding more dificult. Hugs and hoping for the best, Mims |

Shirl Roy has Vista and he likes it I have a Dell with XP here at home and I like it and I am currently looking at a Dell for my work computer You can buy a Dell with Vista that has an XP downgrade. The downgrade cost is $99. The Guys at my work all have Macs, I personally don't care for them and I consider myself computer savvy but they are just plain difficult compared to a PC and feel that unless you are a graphic artist their cost can't be justified. And a Mac's operating system are not the same, I think the current one is Leopard. Mac is a different World Shirl I'm just not sure you would be happy with it. Susie |

Thanks guys - I appreciate your advice. The problem here now is that the DH has taken over the decision. More's the pity! Since I spend 95% of the time on the 'puter and he's a bare 5%, he has no clue as to who should be the boss of me! LOL But we've been married 50 years and I think this is how that happened, you know? Anyway, he's taking me to the Apple store tomorrow. DH has the money so that is not a worry. But the repair guy we had is great (even tho the problem came back I don't blame him) and he builds pc computers for $400.00. Oh well, DH has wanted a MacIntosh forever. As far as I am concerned, I want to be able to come visit my Groups! It will do that, I assume! LOLOL Shirl |

I'm back and will try to write before the 'puter crashes again. You will laugh at this. I got home and just went to Apple.com to print out their specs for Ron. Well!!! My computer refuses to go there - Says "You can't go there!" Do you think it KNOWS???? Anyway, I almost pulled out the VISA and carried an iMac out to the car! HaHa The machine is beautiful. But they are cheap, cheap, cheap. For all that money, you have to buy the software, even word processing. I guess I knew that. But when you buy one, and bring in your CPU, they will transfer your PC files to the new iMac. That was a plus. Better post before I face a black monitor - Shirl |

When I bought my laptop back in January I wanted XP but couldn't find one other than at Dell and it was expensive. So I bought one from Best Buy with Vista. I really didn't like it at first but after using it for a while it's not bad at all. |
