Well things have changed a bit with my grandpa.
The doctor called and cancelled the biopsy because she decided that the tumor they are trying to get to is just not in a place that is going to be easily accessed without having to open him up. So they've decided to wait 3 weeks and do another PET scan and see if anything has changed.
At that point they have a few options to find out what is happening. There are a couple of surgical ways to get at the tumor to biopsy it, but none of them are going to be easy to recover from.
For now the doctor says there are 3 possible outcomes.
1. Lung cancer (most likely)
2. Melanoma (can't remember what kind, but it's another form of cancer)
3. Infection (least likely, but possible)
The PET Scan will verify whether it is one of the cancers or the infection. If the infection, there is a round of really rough antibiotics that they will put him on. If it is one of the cancers, we'll face whatever the treatment options are at that point.
Right now my grandpa is of the mindset that if it is cancer, he does not want to go through the treatments. At his age, there are good odds that the treatments would kill him long before the disease, and they are really rough to cope with, especially when your body just isn't able to heal very well anymore.
So... for now it looks like cancer, but we'll know more after the next PET scan at the beginning of December. (The 1st or 2nd I think - not sure).
We'll see.
I decided that I am going to make the drive home for Thanksgiving. The gas is not really in my budget, but its important to me to go home and see him. Tray will be able to stay here and take care of the pets (except Gabby, who will come with me). And we're both planning to go home for Christmas to see them as well. I just want as much time as I can while he's still here.
