History of the Toy Fox Terrier Breed

The Toy Fox Terrier was bred in America from the smooth fox terrier and smaller toy breeds such as the Chihuahua and the Manchester terrier. This breed, being both a toy and a terrier, exhibits characteristics of both. It is animated and courageous like a terrier, with a milder disposition from the toy breeds. This terrier has maintained its interest in hunting and will readily go to ground to flush out rodents or tree squirrels. It also makes a great family pet with endless energy for playing with children.

Size and Appearance of the Toy Fox Terrier

The toy fox terrier is a small dog with a muscular, athletic appearance. He is elegant and graceful with erect v-shaped ears and large brown eyes. His tail is short, straight, and held high. His coat is short, fine and glossy colored in predominately white with either black or tan.

Toy Fox Terrier Temperament

This intelligent breed is highly trainable, making it an excellent companion for people with disabilities. It learns new tasks quickly and is eager to please its master. Friendly and loyal, the toy fox terrier makes an excellent companion pet. It is spirited, playful, and even comical, but not yappy. The Toy Fox Terrier enjoys the activity of fetch, yet appears to enjoy the inactivity of watching TV from the lap of its owner. This terrier is easily adaptable and is not easily intimidated, believing that it is a big dog.

Toy Fox Terrier Recommended Maintenance

The toy fox terrier requires only minimal maintenance to its smooth, short coat. As a light shedder, this terrier needs only an occasional brushing and bath. Its toenails should be trimmed as needed. This breed makes a great house pet and can be happy in a large house or a smaller apartment. It is not an outdoor dog and may require a sweater in colder weather. The toy fox terrier has a high energy level and tends to exercise itself, so little exercising is required of its owner.
