Cody was 3 yrs. old in Jan. of 03. This little guy had free reign of 28 acres that backed up to government land and that was also home to hundreds of coyotes for most of his life. The coyotes would chase him but smart little Cody would duck into a tiny hole in an old well house he had taken as his home, to get away from them. But as one might imagine, it was only a matter of time. Only heaven knows where the people were who should have been taking care of him and treating him like the precious baby he was. Can you imagine, three years, through some of the coldest winters we've seen in a long time, ice, snow, rain, etc and trying to keep warm; then suffering through trying to find food and water when it was dangerous just to go outside his safe haven? Finally though, Cody was brought to a fellow who did treasure him but Cody had never been in a house, walked up stairs, worn a collar or had to live with another dog and potty training was unheard of, naturally. He was so unused to humans, even a raised voice would make him tremble in fear so forget trying to reprimand him in any other way.
He remained here for a few months, during which time he was taken to the vet, neutered, vaccinated, which had also never been done, not even for rabies.
Cody was placed with a family that had Rat Terriers and knew and loved the breed. They even took him to obedience classes and that helped a lot but their neutered male wouldn't get along with him so back he went to the first fellow. This time, with all the training, he did better and even got along with the other male dog but he just wasn't happy.
This man told the other people who had worked with him and they all went looking for someplace for this poor baby to go. They found us on Wednesday and brought him to us Thursday. He's at the Sanctuary now and doing well. He has no problems with the other dogs, of which there are many of all sizes but he's inside with other small dogs too. He's not attempted to bite but he's less tolerant of other dogs infringing on him when he's near me. Will we ever be able to find a suitable home for Cody? It will have to be someone who will be able to give him the stability he needs for the rest of his life. He had a tough start and deserves the best and whether it's here or with his own family, we'll just have to see.
If you think you might be able to offer this little fellow what he needs, just give us a call or email us. Also, of course, you are welcome to send a donation for Cody and all the other animals that have found their way here.
