Our Murphy is a Yellow Labrador Retriever (female). My husband tells me that when he and his first wife got her as a puppy, they named her after Murphy Brown .
Murphy didn't enter my life until the summer of 2002 (late June), when I met Scott. I remember on our first date, I was afraid to talk about my dogs, nor let him even know they were there , because I didn't know whether he even liked dogs. Well, he put my mind at ease while we were at dinner and said something about his dog, Murphy, and from then on, we talked "dogs" a lot. Several days later, I met Murphy, who was 12 years old at the time. Although she was already deaf, she was just delightful and I fell in love with her right away.
Scott has always had to travel a lot for business, and he was boarding Murphy at his veterinarian's office when he would go out of town. They did adore her there as I picked her up for him quite a few times early on. As our relationship progressed, I suggested to him that he let me try and keep her at my house, knowing that Honey and Lilly never met a stranger, and hoping that she would do ok with the cats. Murphy had never seen a cat! And believe it or not, she would chase them around the house! LOL!!! But she eventually got accustomed to them and always did fine in my home, even with multiple foster puppies coming through that summer. I think she was with me more than she was with him by late July or so, and in August we decided we were going to get married, so she just stayed with Helen and me instead of going back and forth to Scott's house.
As I look back over the last 3 1/2 years, it doesn't seem like I've only known her that short amount of time. We have become good buddies and I have been her primary caregiver in his absence, and we have gone through some major surgery and illnesses, but she has always come through like a champ.
Murphy is a bit odd in that she is not the clingy, touchy-feely kind of dog that we associate with Labs and Golden Retrievers, but she "loves" in her own special way. There is no greater sight than to see her face when my husband walks through the door. Her ears perk up and her eyes get bright and that tail thumps and thumps.
There will be a huge void in our lives when Murphy is no longer with us, and we know that day is coming, but what a privledge it has been for Helen and me to have her in our lives. I probably will never walk into my den without looking over in "Murphy's Corner" to wave at her, long after she is gone.
