Freddie came to me first from Doberman Rescue. She was 14 months old when I got her, at a reduced adoption rate because she has a deformed nose. Without sounding like a cliche, she rescued me. I was very depressed and having a hard time trying to figure out why I should keep on living. She has given me joy and unconditional love. We visit nursing homes and she used to act out stories that I'd read to the residents. Unfortunately, her arthritis has now stopped her from doing the tricks, but she still loves the visiting. Freddie will be seven in April. She has hip dysplasia, arthritis, spay incontinence, and a thyroid problem. She also has problems with disks in her neck. She has the sweetest temperament of any dog I've ever known and is my comfort.
Louie came to us about a year after Freddie. He came from Internet Miniature Pinscher Rescue (IMPS). He was 2 1/2 when he came to live with us. For the first 2 1/2 years of his life, he was in a crate 23 hours a day. When I received his paperwork, it showed that he was boarded more than he was home. He has the full run of the house now and will be six in January. He is a real ball of fire and keeps me laughing all the time. He's not good with visiting the nursing homes, though, because he can't stay still long enough to let them pet him. And I don't know if he realizes that he can walk on four legs and doesn't have to bounce along on two.
Freddie used to get these panting episodes before Louie came along. After all sorts of examinations, the vet felt it was simply stress. I guess he was right because as soon as Louie came to live with us, Freddie's panting episodes stopped. That little 15 lb. dog saved both me and Freddie.
