Lilly's story started in one of the earlier posts on this thread, long ago, along with her sister, Honey's, story. Instead of repeating her story, here, I thought I would share some special words that were sent to me, when she died, earlier this year, along with some special pictures.
The first poem accompanied a beautiful portrait of our girl, that my husband presented to me on Mother's Day, 2007. He wrote the poem, and that made it even more special. This is the first time I have shared those words with you all. When Scott and I had our first date, and he met Lilly and Honey, she greeted him with a dead rat in her mouth (thus the reference to the rat in his poem). I knew I loved him that night because how many men would have disposed of that rat for me, and still asked me out on another date? He and Lilly had a wonderful love affair and her death affected him very deeply, as it did me.
Lilly
Sweeter there will never be,
Another puppy as she.
Her happy smile, Her gentle nudge
Never known to hold a grudge.
To meet her at first, a pleasure is that,
Even if she gives you a rat.
Gone too soon, our hearts do ache.
From this bad dream, we wish to wake.
She filled out hearts, with days of smiles,
Just being herself, all the while.
A playful girl, at times was she,
But mostly still, you’d find her to be.
A bone at her paw, her eyes lightly closed
Was her favorite position, She often chose.
She wins the show, with kindness and sweet,
With tousseled hair and matted feet.
With golden brown fur, and eyes so clear,
Losing your love, her only fear.
She lives as strong, as ever still
In our hearts she always will.
The next two poems were written by a special friend, a pet lover, Karen Watts, who I have known since 2000. Every since anyone knew me online, there was always Lilly, my little, special girl.
Lilly, lovely girl
Beloved Lilly, pretty girl
Loved by many in this old world
Logan's bright flower, her pretty golden girl
Beloved, too, of Helen, human pup who watched you grow
And of oh so many, whose lives you touched
In your time on Earth here below
Too soon your golden light has dimmed
Too soon we say farewell,
But gone now to the Rainbow Bridge
Sick no more, now eternally well
Run free, dear Lilly, and frolic free
Amongst the flowers whose name you bore
Watch over your whole family
Now and forever more
We love you, Lilly, that you knew
A life of love is what you lived
Golden love shone through your eyes
And will shine on in our hearts - that gift forever given
Lilly dear, when springtime comes
All over the land, from South to North
Think of you, of course we will
When the now-dormant lillies rise out of the earth
Mine, dear, are orange, not golden like you
But lillies are all lovely, regardless of hue
Lilly watch over your family on earth
Send warm rays of golden love
To warm heart and hearth
One thing that I can say, honestly, is that my Lilly was not only loved by me, but by my entire family, my loving petsitter, Wanda, and my "cyber" family, too. I've had so many people tell me that it just isn't right to not be able to say "Honey and Lilly", as they were sisters (sharing the same father), 5 months apart in age, so different in personality, but they loved each other completely. Lilly was my "heart", because I wanted a dog of my own after losing Kaycee. It was a perfect match from the very first day we met. My Lilly left me too soon, as did her brother, Zipper. But I have wonderful memories of that precious girl who blessed so many people in her short time on this earth.
I will close this tribute with two of my all time favorite pictures of Lilly, with her best friend, Honey.
