Selecting the Right Identification Tag for Your Dog
by: Pet Veterinarians

Every pet should have an identification tag! There are many styles, sizes, shapes, and materials to choose from. Here are some tips to help you choose the right one!

Desirable Features

  •   Durable
  •   Lightweight
  •   Easy to clean
  •   Safe
  •   Permanent

    Ideal Choice

  •   The ideal choice is a permanently engraved plastic or metal tag with your pet’s name and your phone number. They are durable and easy to clean. These are available by mail or at do-it-yourself kiosks.

    Shopping Tips

  •   A tag should be one of your first purchases for any pet. If you don’t know your pets name yet, create a tag that says “help me home?with your phone number. Consider adding the word “reward?to give extra encouragement to the finder.

  •   Some collars can be custom imprinted or embroidered with your dog’s name and even your telephone number, which is a great alternative to the typical “tag?

  •   Keep information accurate and up-to-date. If you move or change your phone number, obtain new tags without delay. If you’re traveling or relocating, consider getting a special set of tags with your cell phone number or the phone number of a trusted friend or relative.

  •   Consider identification tag systems that offer registration and a toll free number to call in the event your pet is lost.

    More Tips

  •   Supplement your pet’s safety with a microchip. Identification tags can get your pet home quickly when found locally. However, if your pet loses his collar or tag, most likely he will eventually end up at the pound or local emergency clinic where the first thing they will do is scan for a microchip.

  •   Don’t attach the ID tags to the same link you use for his leash. Better collars come with 2 rings –one to hook the leash and one for the tags. This minimizes the chance of a tag coming off when using the leash.

  •   Many dogs are picked up as “strays?because they aren’t wearing collars, or their collars do not carry any identifying tags. Remember: Identification is your dog’s ticket home.
