FENG SHUI FUNDAMENTALS with T. Raphael Simons

Underground Shars

Shar, meaning killing Chi, is an important subject in feng shui. Chi, generally thought to be a kind of energy, has several forms. The one everyone likes best is called Shang Shi, the kind that is life giving and generates growth and prosperity. The form people don't like is called Ssu Chi, or dying energy, felt in rotting buildings and other places in a state of decay. The Chi that is most elusive is called Shar.

Shar can appear even in an environment that feels wonderful, yet something is very wrong and luck is bad. Underground shar, or noxious rays, is linked with emotional and physical disease and poisonous feelings that sometimes come up among people living in the same house. The term “noxious rays” is understood by Chinese geomancers to be a serious problem.

Noxious rays are sometimes caused by underground water courses, underground rock fissures, sharp underground rock formations, burial grounds, trees that were broken and plowed under, toxic waste, malignant occult influences, and so on. They can extend for miles. Sometimes they appear and disappear periodically, sometimes with the phases of the moon—especially when connected with underground water. Virgin springs underground are sometimes a source of noxious rays.

Because land and houses have a kind of memory, places where there was misfortune, tragedy or violence can also hold a kind of shar that causes bad luck. That is why it is a good idea to find out what was happening in your house before you moved in. Were the prior occupants lucky or not? It is always a good idea to totally clear the vibes of a house before moving in.

Underground shar can be detected without any dowsing instruments by people who are particularly sensitive and alert. Short of that, a very handy tool is the pendulum. Working with a pendulum is easy. The pendulum works by reading your ideomotor responses to questions requiring a yes or no answer. A pendulum is basically a weight suspended from a string. A heavy sewing needle or a bead works just fine. Before reading with it, you need to test how it indicates yes and no. Test it by holding it by its string, hanging a few inches, and ask first what is yes. The pendulum will move one way or another. When you are sure of its yes signal, ask it for no. Once you get yes and no clear, ask the pendulum if there is a noxious ray in your house. If it says yes, get a copy of your floorplan or property map and paste it to a cardboard surface. Then get a spool of copper wire and masking tape and tape down the wire all the way around the outline of the floorplan or property line. And just before the ends of the copper wire touch, cut the wire. There should be a little gap. That breaks the noxious ray. It works.

T. Raphael Simons, author of Feng Shui Step by Step, taught music before embarking on his studies in occult science. Practicing and teaching feng shui since 1988, Raphael studied with Chinese astrologer and feng shui expert Terry Lee. Raphael was also the student and teaching assistant of Ivy Jacobson, a great Western astrologer. In addition to feng shui and astrology, he practices as a psychic and a hypnotherapist. His latest book, The Feng Shui of Love, will be released toward the end of this year.
