Animals and Witchcraft
Animals, both physical and mystical, are an important part of many Witches' lives. Witches may chose to work with a variety of ways: As Totem Animals, Familiars and/or Power Animals.
Totem Animals are much more than an animal you like or of which you admire the attributes. They can come to you in your sleeping or waking dreams or during meditations, or even right up to you on the sidewalk. If you will listen, they are here to guide and help you. It is believed that they find you because they have something you need from them, be it power, attributes or a message or a lesson to be learned.
A Familiar is an animal that lives with the witch and assists him/her in magickal works. It may or may not be your Totem Animal. Traditionally cats are associate with witches. Other animals, like dogs, rabbits, horses, mice and snakes can be familiars too. (Some urban witches have birds, squirrel and even cockroaches as familiars).. A familiar represents all the good qualities of that animal and is attune to the witch. It provides the witch with a link to the animal kingdom and the essence of their power.
Power Animals are called upon by a Witch for specific purposes. For example, a witch may choose the animal that lends power to a specific kind of magick, such as a tiger for aggressiveness or courage, a bear for strength, jaguar for speed, snake for medicine, etc.
Animals come to us because they have a lesson we need to learn a power they are willing to share with a friend. They seek to give us a gift of understanding, universal love, energy, and knowledge. In general, animals remind us that we are part of the earth; that each creature has a place; that each creature has a skill of it's own.
