Wiccan Beliefs

In 1999 Phyllis Curott, author of Book of Shadows, estimated that there were 5 to 10 million Wiccans in the World.

Most forms of Wicca are henotheistic. They recognize a single divine source, and view other Gods and Goddesses as manifestations or aspects of that primal deity. Henotheistic and polytheistic religions have traditionally been among the world's most religiously tolerant faiths.

bullet Wicca has commonly been viewed as a polytheistic religion - one which worships multiple deities: gods and goddesses. Although a widespread belief, this is not particularly accurate.
bullet Some have viewed it as a monotheistic religion, because it recognizes a supreme Goddess: the panentheistic principle of the Great Mother, that all reality is a unity. The entire universe is seen as one divine entity who is simultaneously at one with the universe and who transcends it as well.
bullet Some view Wicca as Trinitarian because the Mother is simultaneously visualized as a triad -- one Goddess with three persons:
bullet Maiden, the Goddess of new beginnings, springtime and morning.
bullet Mother, the Goddess of growth who nurtures these new creations in the summertime and midday.

Crone, the Goddess of death, autumn and evening, passing into the sleep of winter.

Most forms of Wicca are duotheistic; they recognize a divine partnership of God and Goddess, whose union is the source of all life. Other gods and goddesses are facets, forms, manifestations, or aspects of the supreme duo.

Wiccans follow one of two major divisions within Wicca:

bullet Traditional Wicca: this is secretive and coven based.
bullet Solitary Wicca: this is open and individualistic.

Many Wiccans believe in the repetitious Transmigration of the Soul. This is the transfer of one's soul after death into another body. This produces a continuing cycle of birth, life, death and rebirth through their many lifetimes. Each life is a learning lesson, and the place of rest between each lesson is called the Summerland.

Meditation is often practiced, with Spellcraft being the most common form. Other activities include the celebration of the Sabbats and the Full Moons, the Great Rite which represents the divine creation of all life, and a sacred meal dedicated to the divine.

Wicca has a deserved reputation of being highly tolerant of other religions. Wiccans have a saying: "An it harm none, do what you will."
