Christmas SpooniesBy Brent PallasPhotographed by Tom McWilliam Keep your eyes peeled for metal teaspoons at yard sales, or scout the mall for inexpensive ones. When bent, the handles turn into hooks, and the bowls become smiling Santas and snowmen.
Metal teaspoons
Delta Ceramcoat Metal Primer
Acrylic paints (Ceramcoat White, Medium Flesh, Fiesta Pink, Bittersweet Orange)
Small flat and round paintbrushes
1/4" stencil brush
Felt, fleece and fabric scraps
Red and black fine permanent markers
Iron-on fabric stiffener (Pellon Craft Bond)
Pliers; sandpaper
Scissors; pinking shears (optional)
Glue gun
For snowman: 15" 20-gauge florist's wire; 2 small buttons
BEND upper quarter of spoon handle back to form hook, bending first over a table edge, then using pliers.
SAND back of spoon bowl lightly. Wash and dry. Apply metal primer. Let dry.
PAINT back of bowl flesh color for Santa, white for snowman. Let dry. With hook at top, paint pink cheeks using stencil brush. Let dry. With black marker, make dot eyes and snowman's mouth. Paint white eyebrows on Santa, carrot nose on snowman. Let dry.
IRON stiffener to back of fabrics.
SANTA: Draw patterns for hat, mustache and beard. Cut from fabrics, cutting mustaches (2) and beard from felt or fleece or with pinking shears. Cut white hat cuff and pompom. Glue pieces to spoon. Draw red mouth.
SNOWMAN: Cut felt hat, fabric or felt scarf 1" x 6" and 2 felt mitten shapes. Wind 15" wire around a pencil; remove; stretch center and glue to back of spoon tip for arms. Glue mittens to ends, button or small fabric star to mittens. Fold scarf to look tied; glue to front.
