TO KNIT HAT:

Knitting abbreviations

Front: With smaller needles and MC, cast on 47 sts. Beg with K row, work 4 rows in St/st. Next row (RS; forming fold line): *K2tog, yfon.* Rep bet *s to last st. K last st. Beg with P row, work 3 rows St/st. Change to larger needles. With C, work 2 rows St/st. With B, work 2 rows St/st, inc 3 sts evenly across last row -- 50 sts. Next row: (RS): *With A, K2. With B, K2.* Rep bet *s to last 2 sts. With A, K2. Next row: *With A, P2. With B, P2.* Rep bet *s to last 2 sts. With A, P2. Next row: With B, K all sts, dec 3 sts evenly across row -- 47 sts. With B, P 1 row. With C, work 2 rows St/st. Proceed in Stripe Pat until work from fold line measures 71/2", ending with P row. Next row: Keeping continuity of Stripe Pat, K4, then slip these 4 sts onto holder. Bind off next 39 sts. Knit rem 4 sts and slip them onto another holder.

Back: Work same as Front.

Ties: Keeping continuity of Stripe Pat, K4 from right holder of Front, then K4 from right holder of Back -- 8 sts. Cont in Stripe Pat until Tie measures 12", ending with P row. Bind off. Rep from holders on opposite side of Hat.

Finishing: Sew side, top and tie seams. Fold lower edge of hat to WS along fold line; sew inside hat.

Pom-poms: Working with 1 strand each of MC, A and B, wrap yarn around 3 fingers about 50 times. Remove from fingers; tie another piece of yarn tightly around center. Cut all loops open. Trim yarn ends to form smooth pom-pom. Make 2 pom-poms in this manner. Sew to ends of ties.
