Dressing-Room Insider: How to Tell if It Fits

Our 9-point plan for finding clothes that won't pinch, pucker or leave you uncovered

garment's care.

Check buttons
Buttons shouldn't pull, and fabric shouldn't gape.

Assess the waist
Make sure there's no flesh overflow.

Check sleeve length
The cuff should hit just past your wrist bone.

Wear shoes
Bring along a pair of two-inch heels -- probably the most common heel height in your closet -- for trying on pants.

Check pants length
The hem should cover the arch of your foot with a slight fold (also known as a "break").

Check Yourself
Turn to the side
We all check ourselves out from the front and the back, but the side view often gets skipped. Make sure you like the way your waist and tummy look from this angle too, to ensure your most flattering fit.

Hug yourself
If a shirt's too snug, you'll never feel comfortable in it (and if it doesn't feel good, you won't look good). If you're afraid the shirt may tear during the hug test, put it back on the rack and try, try again.

Do squats
To know whether a pair of pants really fits, you have to sit, bend, walk and move the way you do in the real world. Take a short stroll outside the dressing room to adequately assess their comfort factor.
