Love Your Hair
50 tips to make yours shine
Photographed by Man

Love Your Hair - PoolSummer is fun time, but not for your hair. Damaging chlorine and salt water, color-fading UV rays, excessive heat styling and frizz-raising humidity all can take their toll. But we have expert advice to keep your hair in tip-top shape. So get the look you want, no matter what the weather.

What’s the last thing you want to worry about when the weather’s fine and you have time to play? A bad hair day! Give yourself a break from warm-weather hair woes with these tips and tricks. After all, wouldn’t you rather be out in the sun having some fun?

1. Healthy hair requires a diet rich in protein, found in foods such as salmon, tuna, chicken and cottage cheese.

2. Don’t overwash. Some shampoos recommend lathering up twice, but once is enough to remove dirt and styling products.

3. Product buildup can make hair dull. Use a clarifying shampoo every two weeks to help remove residue. A good one: Clairol Herbal Essences Clarifying Shampoo, $3.29.

4. Hair can’t live by shampoo alone. After every washing, use a conditioner to replenish lost moisture.

5. Brighten up. To keep color-treated hair looking vibrant, use a color-enhancing conditioner containing a small amount of pigment once a week. We like Matrix Biolage Earth Tones Color Refreshing Conditioner, $14.95.

6. No more flakes. Improve the condition of your scalp with a shampoo that contains a dandruff-fighting ingredient. Try Neutrogena Therapeutic T/Gel Shampoo, $4.99.

7. Rough towel-drying can be damaging. First, gently squeeze out excess moisture, then pat dry
with a towel.

8. Always rinse with cool water after conditioning. This seals the cuticle and makes strands smooth and shiny.

9. Ease really tight CURLS with a relaxing balm; apply from root to end before towel-drying. Try John Frieda Frizz-Ease Relax Texture Correcting Serum, $9.99.

10. For shine, stylists suggest rinsing with apple cider vinegar weekly after shampooing; then shampoo again.

11. Restore lost moisture to dry, coarse hair with shampoos and conditioners that contain ingredients such as vitamin E, aloe vera and panthenol, like Neutrogena Clean Replenishing Moisturizing Shampoo, $3.99.

12. Get the knots out with a wide-tooth comb. Start at the ends and work your way to the roots.

13. Wait until HAIR is completely dry before using heat-styling tools such as curling and straightening irons.

14. Never set your blow dryer on high. Style using the medium setting and finish off with a cool blast for shine.

15. Protect your hair from hot styling tools with products labeled heat-protecting, such as Sebastian Shaper Iron Works Hot Tools Protecting Spray, $11.95.

16. Dry scalp? Rub in conditioner with fingertips, leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse.

17. Daily heat styling is extremely damaging. Get a trim every six to eight weeks to eliminate split ends.

18. Never clamp down with a straightening iron. Instead, run iron through in one quick motion to prevent frying.

19. Limp hair tends to lie flat at the scalp, resulting in greasy roots. Quick fix: Absorb excess oil by sprinkling on baby powder and combing through.

20. Invest in a natural boar-bristle brush. It will cause less breakage and help distribute hair’s natural oils from roots to ends.

21. Shiny hair is healthy. But if yours isn’t in good shape, fake it with a shine spray; focus on the ends where the most damage occurs.

22. Heavy styling products, such as gels, pomades and waxes, can weigh down fine, thin hair. Instead, hold your style with a light mist of finishing spray. Try L.A. Looks Style & Lock Hair Spray, $2.79.

23. For super-straight styles, use the nozzle attachment on your blow dryer. It provides a direct and concentrated air flow.

24. Try a smoothing Serum containing silicone before and after blow-drying to prevent frizz on humid days. We like L’Oréal Vive Smooth-Intense Frizz Solution, $5.99.

25. Help repair dry, damaged hair by applying a mask once a week. Use Thermasilk Intensive Conditioning Thermal Wrap, $7.99. Leave on for 30 minutes or longer.

26. Brushing or finger-styling natural curls will make them frizz and pouf out. For best results, air-dry; if blow-drying is necessary, use a diffuser attachment.

27. UV radiation can destroy color pigment, so look for products containing UV filters like TRESemmé Total Colour Care Vibrant Colour Shampoo and Conditioner, $3.29 each.

28. Hair is like a sponge and will become saturated with the first thing it comes in contact with, like chlorine. Before jumping in the pool, wet hair and comb through conditioner for extra protection.

29. To detangle after swimming, use a conditioning spray such as Pantene Pro-V Detangle Light Spray Conditioner, $3.99.

30. A good antifrizz product even for straight hair: Physique Frizz Control Curl Cream, $7. It also acts as a moisturizer and lasts up to 20 hours.

31. Rinse hair immediately in clean water after swimming to banish harsh chemicals and salt that can turn it green or brassy.

32. Give curls control by mixing a leave-in conditioner with styling gel or cream. Towel-dry, then apply mixture from roots to ends.

33. Overexposure to the sun can cause color-treated blonds and brunets to turn brassy. Best way to protect your color: Wear a wide-brim cotton hat.

34. Going from straight to curly and back again with chemicals wreaks havoc. Find a style you like and stick with it for at least six months.

35. If you’re a frequent swimmer, try VO5 Hot Oil Hair Treatment, $3.49. It removes 75 percent more chlorine than regular shampoo and moisturizes at the same time.

36. Prevent a sunburned scalp by applying sunscreen to the exposed section of your part and along the hairline.

37. Too late? Soothe a burned scalp and reduce peeling by applying moisturizing pure aloe vera gel directly on the area before bed.

38. The downside of chemical processes such as coloring, perms and relaxers? Locks can become dry and dull. Limit damage by deep-conditioning the night before chemical treatments.

39. Women of color can restore moisture with products enriched with natural ingredients like jojoba and coconut oil. Try Pantene Relaxed and Natural Daily Oil Cream Moisturizer, $3.99.

40. The hair of African American women tends to be brittle and to tangle easily. Oil-based products designed specifically for this hair type provide the necessary nutrients to strengthen and smooth.

41. Protect your highlights from the sun. Dab conditioner onto highlighted strands, pull hair into a bun and secure with hair sticks.

42. Color and highlights are great in moderation, but don’t combine them with relaxers or perms: They can cause double the damage.

43. Gently brushing thinning hair at night stimulates growth by increasing blood circulation to the scalp.

44. Flip it. Get instant volume by sweeping your part in the opposite direction of its natural growth pattern.

45. Lay off heavy hairspray. Youthful-looking styles have movement with fluffy, flyaway pieces.

46. For natural-looking, chemical-free highlights, squeeze six lemons into a pint of water, pour over hair, comb through and sit in the sun.

47. Updos this summer aren’t structured and don’t have to be perfect. But preparation is important because smooth hair can slip out of buns. Add texture with a volumizing spray like Charles Worthington Big Hair Great Body! Styling Spray, $5.99.

48. Give it a rest. Avoid daily use of styling products, straightening irons and hot curlers. Wait one or two days between.

49. Less is more. Start with less product than you think you’ll need. You can always add more.

50. Don’t worry! Too much stress can cause hair loss; for your hair’s sake, relax! wd
