How to Wear a Camisole
By Lisa Kovalovich
Try this trend -- without going too bare.
Once for wear only under clothing, camisoles have recently taken center stage as stand-alone pieces. The look can, however, be tricky to pull off. Here, the easiest, most chic ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe:
For work: A camisole peeking out from under a blazer or cardigan adds a feminine touch to an office outfit. The key to making it work: Stick to a simple camisole. That means forgo lacy touches, embroidery, and sheer fabrics in favor of solids and delicate prints. And do not take off your layers -- a camisole alone is too sexy for the workplace. Pair your ensemble with businesslike pumps or slingbacks and straight-leg pants for a professional feel.
For weekends: Camisoles make great weekend pieces, as they dress up basic jeans and sneakers in a not-trying-too-hard way. For weekends, almost anything goes, from retro-styled, printed silk camisoles to ribbed cotton versions. If the camisole feels too bare, toss a hoodie or chunky cardigan on top. For extra added comfort, try a camisole with a built-in shelf bra, like Victoria's Secret line of bra-top tanks ($25).
For evenings: Nighttime is when camisoles really shine. For special events, go for the sexiest, frilliest camisole you can find -- there's no limit to lace or beading here! This bias-cut cami from Newport News (shown) is a steal at $24, and can be accented with a wrap if you feel too exposed. Pair with a super-sexy pencil skirt or sleek cigarette pants, and finish the look with strappy heels and dangling earrings.
