The First Place program was established in 1981 to answer the basic question, “Since God has saved us from our sins and given us an abundant life, why can’t we, as Christians, use that same power in the area of weight control??/DIV>
The First Place program combines Bible study and Scripture reading with a sensible diet, and helps participants focus on giving Christ “First Place?in every area of life. The ultimate goal is for each person to experience more abundant life as Christ becomes Lord of his or her spiritual, mental, and physical lives.
First Place consists of nine categories of fitness to which members commit:
1. Attendance and punctuality
2. Prayer
3. Scripture reading. The First Place Scripture reading plan includes daily sections from the Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs.
4. Scripture memory. Members memorize one verse each week and repeat it when they weigh in at the meeting.
5. Bible study. Members go through twelve weeks of Bible study. Each study features seven questions, one question per day.
6. “Live-It?eating plan. First Place believes that the diabetic exchange eating plan is the best eating plan for anyone. Women are allowed 1200 calories in exchanges and men are allowed 1500. The plan never changes; however, once the goal weight is achieved, exchanges are increased for lifetime maintenance eating.
7. Fact sheets. A fact sheet listing what the person has eaten each day is turned in at each weekly meeting, analyzed, and returned the next week.
8. Phone calls. Class members call one another every week to encourage and deepen friendships.
9. Exercise. Participants exercise aerobically a minimum of three times per week.
