Chonda & David PierceThis Christian comedian and her husband have discovered that laughs last.by Mark Moring If Chonda Pierce is the queen of Christian comedy, then her husband, David, is the behind-the-scenes king. Chonda, whose CDs and videos, including her recent video Have I Got a Story for You!, have kept women in stitches for years, says David's not just her biggest fan, but a great husband and stay-at-home dad: "I bring home the bacon," says Chonda, "but he's the one who fries it up—and he does a better job at it than I ever could."
WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO EACH OTHER?
David: Her looks and creativity. Chonda was the lead in all the high school plays and talent shows—things I always wanted to be. I've been living my life through her.
Chonda: I was 17, and he was Big Man on Campus, Mr. Wrestling Star, a stud. But I was also drawn to him because he was a survivor. He grew up in poverty, but he was so strong and resilient and resourceful. I was drawn to that. We were best friends in high school and college till we finally decided we couldn't imagine the rest of our lives without each other. That's when we decided to get married.
HOW WAS THE HONEYMOON?
Chonda: David said he was going to show me the world. So he took me to Epcot at Disney World!
David: We saw seven countries in two hours.
WHAT'S BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE IN YOUR MARRIAGE?
Chonda: Our daughter. She definitely was not planned!
David: We went to Florida for a little sun, and got a daughter. But I think the biggest surprise is?BR>Chonda: That we're still married after 20 years.
David: We run into people from high school, and nobody's still married any more.
YOU BOTH COME FROM DIVORCED HOMES. HOW HAS THAT AFFECTED YOUR MARRIAGE?
Chonda: It's forced us to cling to each other. We are determined not to be a statistic. We've had our ups and downs. But we've never even considered the option not to be married.
David: We've both seen the hurt and devastation of divorce. I saw what it did to my family, and decided that would not happen to me. I remember watching my parents and thinking, Man, they took a vow. I determined that I could make it work where they couldn't.
GOT ANY GOOD MARITAL ADVICE?
Chonda: Have family devotions. Turn off the TV. Laugh a lot.
David: I cry at chick movies, so that's my advice to women: Marry somebody who cries at chick movies.
