The Spa Bathroom
Judy Christopherson

Of all the rooms in the home, the bathroom has perhaps undergone the most changes in the last five decades. Bathrooms in the '50s usually consisted of one sink, the toilet and a tub. In the '80s, separate shower stalls and makeup vanities became popular. The '90s brought double sinks, larger rooms, and jetted tubs.

Today the spa bathroom is the trend. A spa bathroom suggests that it has spa features ?relaxation, solitude, privacy and pampering. It alludes to leisure and a rejuvenating time in a rapid-paced life.

The features of spa bath could include:

  • A large, relaxing jetted tub ?a shower for two
  • Heated towel bars
  • One or two sinks with space to put cosmetics nearby
  • Mirrors, both regular and magnifying, on extension arms
  • A separate toilet and/or bidet
  • Appropriate benches for seating to change
  • A relaxing chair or chaise
  • Appropriate lighting that can be dimmed
  • Storage space within the walls of the room for towels and robes
  • Shelving for sponges, masks, bath liquid
  • Candle sconces

If possible, the bathroom should be located so that there is a view with an option for privacy such as blinds or shutters. It could have a heated floor or piped in music.

The options are many! The key is to customize to fit your lifestyle. Most importantly, remember that the spa bathroom is a quiet retreat where we can withdraw from the world to rejuvenate our thoughts and restore our bodies.
