Does anyone know if it is illegal or slander to post on a message board the eBay IDs of people we've had bad experiences with? It should be allowed so no one else has a bad experience with the same person. Is it ok Mike if we started a thread to give people the heads up? I've been receiving a LOT of damaged pieces and this last one was a real winner.

Robert

Ebay now has a blind feedback rating system for sellers.  If you use it it can only help down the line.  Rate both the good and the bad for the good of everyone.

Finding the pieces in the box means that the post office is responsible IF you bought insurance.  The seller should be cooperative about helping with the claim process.  I have had to do that in a couple of instances over the years and, as anyone who has ever received a package from me knows, I am VERY careful about how I pack.  Sometimes the post office just has to use a package as a football, luckily for all of us, not very often if things are packed well.  (Also, the post office now allows the claim to be made by either the seller or the buyer - just be prepared with proof of purchase and the actual piece.)

Again, PayPal and Ebay both have insurance for fraud and misrepresentation..make use of it.

Posting names on this board, or any other, is not either libel or slander if you stick very strictly to the absolute truth.  It, however, should not be used as a forum to slam anyone you just don't care for.  Using this sort of forum has to be kept to really dishonest sellers and not to fixable disagreements with someone you may not care for.

For sellers, we used to use an invisible mark to authenticate our pieces when we shipped them out.  That way, the buyers were/are kept honest also and that protects sellers from the same sort of buyers who we are talking about as sellers.  There was a spate of buyers "up-grading" their collections via fradulent eBay purchases. It ended with posts on the HK board.

Again, be circumspect and explore every possible avenue of agreement before using this forum, but as a last resort, here it is.

That was my delete above.  Sorry.  I was going to talk about insurance and then opted not to since we all know how that works.

When ever I buy on eBay, I ALWAYS pay for insured shipping.  I have a brother in law who works as a baggage handler for Northwestern Airlines... it isn't just the baggage handlers who are rough with the mail... so are the post offices at the airports.  Where he works, mail drops off a chute several stories down into a big bin (that is the post office handling of the mail!)
I have have received  pieces that broke in shipping over the years, and it is a pain to collect from the post office, but I have always gotten my money back.

This was an interesting discussion! Thanks, I learned some new things.

On my first auction, I didn't say anything about insurance in the listing so I opted to pay for it myself. I was afraid it would break during transit (the marble piece, not the pewter one) and I'd be out of everything.

How do you handle it when you sell or buy outside of eBay? There's really no way to know if they're "good" or "bad", is there? I know eBay isn't a sure thing but it seems to help your odds, no?

I have had an instance where the post office refused to pay for an item siting the fact that the shipper had not packed the item well and therefore they felt that it couldn't be proven that the damage occured during shipment! So maybe the post office is looking at this issue too. (Or maybe they are just stricter in some areas than others.) Regardless, I usually take the extra time and ask the seller to wrap extra carefully.

I recently had a terrible experienc eon ebay and had the feedback withdrawn from me but the teest is still there so everyone knows it wasn't my fault and the seller was eveil spirited.

I won and paid the same day, 2 weeks later, they said they were ill and would ship right away,  I said fine, but please ship prioirity since it is already late.  the refused stating they should not be penalized for being sick.  I told them It was not my fault they were sick and they still have to fulfill the auction win.  they refused and refunded my money.

I left negative and they did the same to me stating I never paid.  I told them i paid and that she refunded and she played stupid and opened a non paying bidder.

So I had to report it to ebay. the non paying biidder has been closed and ebay said they will do what is necessary.
I know have another blemish on my feedback.

A while back I sold something and they got it and claimed it was not what I listed.  I sold them a router and they claimed it was a modem.  the box, paperwork, software, cables etc were all fo rthe router.  I told them that I would take a return  but would not pay for shipping as I did not own a modem.  They refused to ship it back so no refund then they went to paypal and opened a dispute.  I won because I offered to take it back but because they refused to return it, they could not get a refund.

Please be very careful as it has happened to me in the past...People win your auctions,   get them and swap out their deffective product and claim you sent it to them and it broke.  I now am to the point I mark my goods before shipping in some manner that I only know so I will not get burned.

Several months ago I purchased an item from patricia3097.  The transaction went fine.  I just checked my feedback on ebay from her and it says "no longer a member".

eBay is very cooperative about ending auctions where the piece is damaged after the auction is opened!  I've had reason to be in close touch with eBay recently and they are very easy to work with.  If I were you Robert, I would write to eBay and report the transaction and send Safe Harbor copies of all of the correspondence with that seller.

HI:
After reading all the posts about ebay wanted to add my two cents. I have purchased some items on ebay but have found when something goes wrong  - you're pretty much on your own and can only pray that the people you are dealing with are honest.
A big assumption in this day and age. I have still in my case today I piece I purchased that came broken - no chips in the box - no damage on the box so UPS wouldnt pay - the seller wouldnt refund my money or even contact me once I complained about the piece being broken. So, I dont know if she knew it was broken as the damage is very noticeable or if maybe it broke in shipping and the chips fell out the box which would be almost impossible but guess it could happen.
I have sold multiple pieces online here and on ebay and had someone try to return a "fake" to me as being mine. But, after a breakin at my house, my insurance company had me mark my pieces with a pen that can only be seen with a light. You can probably find out what they are called, my agent gave it to me. It leaves an invisible mark until you use the light and then you can see it. I think the light is called a "black light" I may be wrong. But the pens are out there. Someone else mentioned this earlier in a post. Maybe they know where you buy them. They must not be too expensive or my insurance company would not have given it to me. LOL

Maybe the best way to buy pieces is on the board here where we kind of know each other. But even then -be careful.

Debbie

I think the pen you mentioned is a UV ( ultra Violet ) pen . It writes in a ink that is only visable under Ultra Violet light

Sorry for my delete of my post about the bad eBayer. I probably shouldn't have listed names, I don't want the board or anyone else to get in trouble because of my bad experience. :-)
