Instead of trying to gather up a pack or a belt pouch to carry all your junk in, consider using a multi-pocketed vest. I have used one for years and it sure beats the crap out of lugging a pack around. This does not take the place of having something for your emergency prepardness bag or whatever you may use. This is for when you are hunting or fishing or hiking or whatever it may be and say you weren't planning on having to spend the night in the bush but for whatever reason you have to now. Or you get a nasty cut or something like that. It could be anything.

I use an old fishing vest that I got from God knows where many moons ago. It has a ton of pockets in it and has reinforced shoulders in it. What you decide that you may need is based on personal experience and sometimes judgement of others with experience. Here is an itemized list of what I have in mine, and it may sound like a lot to some but it's not if you think about it. Remember experience levels for this sort of thing vary greatly.

 Leatherman Wave Multi-tool
 4" trapper knife (Kershaw brand)
a dual sided whet stone (Norton) about 4"x2"
Approximately 30' of Jute twine (for tinder)
a small roll of Binders Twine (about 100')
 Sewing kit *
 Small First Aid kit*
 12lb tri-filament line (a small reel)
An Altoids can with assorted fishing gear
A small LED light called a Lenser V2 (made by Coast) that is rediculously bright with an extra set of batterys. There is no bulb to burn out. The light is about the size of a roll of nickels. I use either Duracell or Energizer E2 batteries, they last the longest.
 Toothbrush
Waterproof match tube filled with strike anywhere matches
 Fire Piston with tinder pouch
Two hand/foot warmers (they are thin and stick just about anywhere)
 Small bottle of Deet
 Two space blankets
 Light-weight poncho
 Snare wire

The sewing kit is in a waterproof pill bottle.
 Couple of curved surgeons needles
Couple of carpet needles (different sizes)
 Couple of sewing needles
 Carpet thread
 Several buttons
 Safety pins (assorted sizes)
 Sinew

The first aid kit is stuffed into the smallest container I could get it in which is about
6"x4"x2". It fits right in my side pocket in a ziplock bag so no water will get in it.

 1 goss wrap
 1 packet of bandaides
 4 goss packs
 1 adhesive tape roll
 couple of tounge depressors
 Alchohol wipes
 Burn cream
 Benadryl

 Triple anti-biotic ointment
 Ibuprofen

 Metaxalone
 Cimetidine

 Couple of razor blades
 Couple of sterile scalpals

 Tweezers
 Eye drops
There are a couple other things but I can't remember what they are off hand
Now, I also carry an ACE bandage and a pair of EMT scissors also.

Yes, you have to be careful when you open this kit because if you don't you will dump it!

I don't think I forgot anything but I probably did.
