Can you tell me the origin and the history of the phrase: "The best laid plans of mice and men?" |

From Robert Burns's (1759-1796) poem 'To a Mouse', 1786. It tells of how he, while ploughing a field, upturned a mouse's nest. The resulting poem is an apology to the mouse and goes on to say that  'The best-laid plans o' mice an' men  Gang aft a-gley, An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain For promised joy. '.

|      Gang aft a-gley (A free translation of the second line could be: Often go awry or become unraveled.) |

How can you forecast the coming winter weather using a persimmon?

With difficulty, lol.  Never heard of that one before Wiz but I have used seaweed to forecast weather before, have you ever tried that?     Kiwi |

A Persimmon fruit has many seeds inside. Upon cracking them open, you will find any one of the three pieces of "silverware" shapes. KNIFE: you'll slice through winter (mild) SPOON: you'll need to spoon out the snow (moderate)... FORK: you'll have to "dig in" (severe)... so...whichever you find the most of, within the seeds, is the winter prediction.

Here is another version of the same answer:     Cut open a persimmon seed and look at the shape of the kernel inside. If the kernel is spoon-shaped, lots of heavy, wet snow will fall. If it is fork-shaped, you can expect powdery, light snow and a mild winter. If the kernel is knife-shaped, icy, cutting winds will occur for the next few months... |

Does forked lightning travel up or down?        |

Both, actually. A visible forked channel, called a stepped leader, stretches down from the thundercloud until it induces a streamer of positive charge to rise from Earth to meet it. As soon as the two connect and form a pathway, the bright return stroke shoots up from the ground to the cloud in what we see as the brilliant flash of lightning. |

If you had one fruit or vegetable to rely on for the greatest nutritional value, what would it be? |

Both broccoli and kiwifruit have a very high nutritional value. But if we had to rely on just one, I think we would rather eat lots of kiwifruit than lots of broccoli. |
