Like my guns, they are tools to get a job done. Also like my guns, I have nothing fancy. I have my standard AF survival knife if I have to cut anything big. But for my everyday repetitive chores, I have my good ol' Swiss Army knife. Again, it's nothing fancy. Just a couple of blades, screwdriver (flat and philips) tips, tweezers. My AF knife has a honing stone attacked, so they complement each other.

The stone that comes with the AF knife is not very good.

Military knives are probably the best value for the money that we give for them.  Of course there are other reasons to have knifes instead of just survival.

We need to understand that knifes are required for all sorts of things and your basic old hickory type knifes that can be sharpened with a file are a god sends. A butcher knife with a full blade along with a thin bladed knife and a good paring knife is more important than a Kabar when it comes to actually living in a society that requires you to actually prepare food.

Having actually carried and used a K-Bar in combat, I can say that I can open a can or a man equally well

Yeah the trouble is you don't spend that much time opening a can or a man when your in the woods.

Peel a potato with one. Or use it to pry out a splinter.

The most usless device you can have is a knife that is to big for the job. I carry a three inch opinel "Picnic" knife  and it ends up being far more usefull in the woods than my hunting knife. It is great for preparing small game. It is a folding knife that wieghs nothing.

Don't get me wrong I am not disparaging the KABAR for what it was made for. It is great for digging for roots and for making digging sticks. It is great for cutting because you can actually use a club or a rock to beat on the back of the blade to cut down a pretty sizable sapling.

When I go into the woods for a long stay I take my opinel and an old tomahawk I have had since I was 16 years old. I guess it would open up a can or a man if I had to but normally I don't have that many cans and so far I have not seen the need to open up a dude. But it combined with the little Opinel will do more than a Kabar.

I had a little Navy surplus knife that I can't  remeber the name of. Pilots carried it in WWII. That was a great knife to.

Of course the KABAR is unbeatable for a heavy blade knife.

For the heavy work

This is a 'Do-All Buck Buster'

My K-Bar, 12 in overall, 7in blade. of course I'm not in Vietnam anymore, but then I carried a Marine style K-bar and a German WW2 mauser bayonet  http://www.gunsandswords.com/german-wwii-mauser-bayonet.html. looking at a possible 30-90 stay in the field, you carried everything you needed with you. Living on 80 acres in the boonies, I still carry what I think I might need when I go roaming.

I bet you end up using the pocket knife more than any thing..

I never really got into the elaborate type knifes that are sold for to much money.

Old military knifes and bayonets are already the best knifes on the market and you can pick them up pretty cheap.

I guess making a knife give you appreciation for the process and impoves your use of whatever you make.

There is something about a paring knife with a wooden handle that can be sharped with a file that seems to be just about right for most things.
