North West Territories
Historically the NWT were all lands north & west of Lake Superior. After 1920 it was the part of Northern Canada between the Yukon and Hudson Bay. Now the NWT borders the Yukon and Nunavut Territories (east/west), south British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Northwest Territories has 2 climates, Arctic and Sub Arctic. Summer does not exceed 10°C, while winter can drop as low as -61°C for 7 months of the year. - Capital - Yellowknife (The name derived from the Athapaskan band who possessed tools made from yellow copper)
- Premier - Stephen Kakfwi
- The largest community is Yellowknife at 18 000 (1996). It was named the capital of the NWT in 1967.
- Size - 1 171 918 sq km
Population - app 42 000 Languages spoken - 8 - English & Aboriginal
- Flag - The flag was adopted January, 1969. The blue panels represent lakes & water, while the white, ice & snow. The Coat of Arms is in the center. The Shield was approved by Queen Elizabeth II on February 7, 1957.
- Coat of Arms - two gold narwhals guarding a compass rose. White represent the polar ice, crossed by a wavy blue line (the Northwest Passage) green diagonal line reflects the treeline and forest area, red represents the tuntra. Gold billets and white fox represent wealth in minerals and fur.
- Flower - Mountain Avens.
