Now the boy Samuel ministered to the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation. - 1 Samuel 3:1
From birth Samuel was marked with a calling from God. As he grew up, this calling ripened into a ministry. Samuel ministered under the priest Eli. But Eli had fallen away from the Lord, and his sons were evil. The situation in which Samuel grew up was far from perfect. This did not hinder God from speaking to Samuel. There are no hindrances for God. When the Lord first began to speak, Samuel did not know who it was. He consulted Eli, but initially, he did not receive any help there either.
At last Eli understood that it was the Lord calling Samuel. He instructed Samuel to respond, “Speak, Your servant hears?(1 Samuel 3:10). This simple advice from this worn-out priest, living in defeat, led Samuel into one of the Old Testament’s strongest prophetic ministries. Nothing stops God. Samuel needed training in how to hear from God. It took some time before he was able to distinguish whose voice he was hearing. It took a while before he was ready to hear and communicate what God wanted to say. But it happened.
It is the same with you. God’s Spirit trains your sensitivity. You will hear increasingly better and more clearly, and you will learn to identify a true word from God. Samuel grew up and became so skilled at prophesying that nothing he said fell to the ground. All of Israel understood that he was a prophet of the Lord. In the beginning, he was unable to discern what was from the Lord and what was not, but at the height of his ministry, every word he said was chiseled in heaven. Every word was fulfilled. All of Israel was blessed because the Lord spoke through this servant. Samuel did well in his school and was awarded the highest grades; he was well-prepared for the tasks that awaited.
