How To Make The Devil Run
Theme: Submission Reading: James 4:7-10
"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up."
What do such morbid words have to do with the joyful Christian life? They concern the matter of sin in the life of believers. James is telling us that we cannot afford to let Satan gain one square inch of ground in our hearts. If we do, he will soon control even greater areas of our lives. Many of God’s people have given up ground to Satan in order to commit adultery, to steal, to drink, to cheat on their income tax, or to harbor unforgiveness. Little do they know that what they are doing is "the camel’s nose in the tent". It may only be his nose for now, but worry when the rest of him comes in!
If the enemy finds a weak place in us, he is going to try to use that for his advantage. The only way to keep the enemy out is to live a Holy Spirit-filled life. Keep daily in the Word and prayer. Confess and repent of your failures quickly. Take sin seriously. Be humble enough to recognize that you are prone to sin. Ask God for the strength and courage to never bow down or compromise at any point with the world, the flesh or the devil. In doing this, you will have cut the enemy off from your life; you will have foiled his efforts to foul you up.
Prayer: In Jesus?Name, I resist Satan and bind myself to God’s Word in obedience to His will and way for my life. Amen.
