Vitamin and Mineral Supplements for Menopause

Here is the list of specific supplements, vitamins, and minerals which you should take daily if you are approaching menopausal age, if you are in menopause right now or for a perimenopause supplementation. " In addition to specific foods and food supplements recommended earlier" :

E - up to 800 IU.

Vitamin E stimulates production of estrogen and helps alleviate hot flashes and other distressing symptoms of menopause. note: Vitamin E seems to exert a normalizing effect on estrogen levels; increasing the hormone out in women who are deficient, and lowering it in those who are prone to an excess."

B6 - up to 100 mg.

Vitamin B6 enhances the effectiveness of estrogenic hormones and helps prevent " menopausal arthritis". It also helps to control menstrual edema.

Paba - up to 100 mg.

Paba is a natural subsitute for estrogen: an estrogen synergist, it enhances the effect of estrogen.

Folic Acid - up to 5 mg.

Folic Acid is similar to Paba in it's action as an estrogen synergist.

B12 - 50 mcg.

Vitamin B12 is synergistic with Folic Acid and other B Vitamins.

Pantothenic Acid - up to 100 mg.

Pantothenic Acid can help delay menopause.

Vitamin A - 25,000 units.

Vitamin A is essential for the healthy functioning of the sex glands.

Vitamin C - up to 3,000 mg.

Vitamin C is a detoxifier, rejuvenator, and a stimulant of thyroid and sex glands.

B-Complex, high potency.

Vitamin B-Complex formula can help enhance the effect of isolated B Vitamin which are specific for menopause: Paba, Folic Acid, B6, and Pantothenic Acid. B Vitamins can boost thyroid gland and increase sexual vigor.

Kelp - up to 5 tablets or 1 tsp granules.

Kelp improves the fuction of the thyroid gland, a primary sex gland stimulator, and can help prevent obesity often associated with menopause.

Calcium / Magnesium supplement.

At least 1,000 mg of calcium daily is advisable to support parathyroid function.

Zinc - up to 30 mg.

Zinc is needed for reproductive hormone and enzyme production, for the formation of RNA and DNA, and for proper Vitamin and Mineral utilization, especially for the metabolism of Vitamin A, and for synthesis of insulin and body protein.

D - up to 1,000 units.

Vitamin D improves mineral metabolism and utilization. Most women, especially those who spend much of their time indoors, are deficient in Vtamin D.

Betane Hydrochloride - 1 tablet after ea meal.

Supplementary hydrochloric acid will improve mineral assimilation in older people who often have a low output of their own digestive acids.

A Comprehensive Trace Element Formula.

With Iron, Copper, Manganese, Selenium, ect... all youthifying factors.

Whey Powder - 1 tbs

The regular use of whey will help improve digestion and assimilation of foods and prevent intestinal putrefaction and constipation, which is often associated with menopause.

Specific Herbs for Menopause

Specific herbs helpful in postponing and/or alleviating the symptoms of menopause are : Mexican Wild Yam, Ladie's Slipper, Life Root, and Passion Flower. Black Kohosh, Honduras, Sarsaparilla, False Unicorn Roots, Elder, and Licorice ... all contain some natural estrogen and can be used as supplements to the body's own diminished hormone production during menopause or after Hysterectomy. Some herbalists recommend the following herb combination to combat the distressing symptoms of menopause: Blessed Thistle, Squaw Vine, Rasberry leaves, Golden Seal, Lobelia, Gravelroot, Gingeroot, Cayenne, Parsley, and Marshmallow Root. Another herbal formula for hormonal imbalances produced by menopause includes : Sarsaparilla, Licorice, and Blue Vervene.

The best herbal combination for hot flashes is Black Kohosh, Licorice Root, Sarsaparilla, Blessed Thistle, False Unicorn Roots, Red Rasberry leaves, Elder, and Squaw Vine.
Another specific herb for menopause is Mother Worth ( Leonurus Cardiaca) . It is used mostly for palpitations of the heart due to the endocrine or functional nervous disorder associated with menopause. This herb increases menstrual flow, so it shouldn't be used by those who suffer from excessive flow.

Many herbs sold in health food stores today are either in capsule form, or in the form of dried herbs, pre-packaged in carton or bags. The best way to use herbs : take one teaspoon of dry herbs or open and empty 2-3 capsules of powdered herbs into a cup and pour boiling water over it. Let stand for 10 to 15 minutes, strain, sweeten with honey if desired and consume. For therapeutic uses, take 2-3 cups per day, on an empty stomach.

David Hoffmann offers a simple formula, using Chaste Berry as the base, combined with a choice of other herbs for specific symptoms. He recommends combining half teaspoon Chaste Berry with half teaspoon tincture of each herb added. Hoffmann states," Chaste Berry will ease the unfoldment of the natural process of menopause." The optional herbs include : St John's Wort for depression, Mother Worth for palpitations accompanying hot flashes, and Scullcap for anxiety.

Dr. Heron uses individualized formulas for her patients, but finds that the general formula works for most women. She prescribes herbs in liquid preparations, taken throughout the month, one teaspoon of tincture formula three times per day. As she states, " this is because menopause is not patyhological (disease-causing) and these herbs are not drugs, just tonics to the female reproductive system." In developing an individual formula she selects from the following herbs: Chaste Berry, for it's hormone-balancing effect: Motherworth for it's assistance in anxiety: Fale Unicorn for hormonal and digestive benefit: Dong Quai, Licorice, and Alfalfa for estrogen enhancement: Cramp Bark or Black Haw Bark because they both allay spasticity, which can promote hot flashes: and Black Kohosh as an anti-spasmodic and estrogen enhancer. The last herb was compared in a clinical study with estrogen replacement as a treatment for menopausal symptoms after hysterectomy ( with intact ovaries ). It was shown to be as effective as synthetic hormones.

Dr. Hudson reports, " I have been using an herbal formula for eight years and it does relieve the symptoms of menopause in most women. It has two parts Licorice, two parts Burdock Root, two parts Dong Quai, one part Wild Yam, and one part Motherworth. We powder the herbs and put thenm in capsules. The higher dose is two capsules three times per day, reducing it as needed." Menopause is a natural transition time that shouldn't be creating disease if we are in balance.

Bioidentical Hormones : nature's ideal design

In contrast to Premarin and Provera, the hormones that are recommended are exactly the same as those found in the female body. Though they are synthezied in the lab from hormone precursors found in soy beans or yams, their molecular structure is designed to be an exact match of the hormones found in the human body. Hence we call them bioidentical, a term that is far more precise than "natural", which can be used in confusing and ambiguous ways ...e.g.; Premarin is said by some people to be a "natural" product because it is made from horse urine. As Dr. Joel Hargrove, a pioneer in the use of bioidentical hormones and the medical director of the Menopause Center at Vanderbuilt University Medical Center in Tennessee, says, " Premarin is a natural hormone if your native food is hay !"

Because bioidentical hormones are just like the hormones that our bodies were designed to recognize and utilize, their effects are more physiologic (consistant with our normal bio chemistry) with less chance for unpredictable side effects at low replacement doses than with synthetic, non-bioidentical hormones. To take advantage of these benefits, you first have to give up the notion that there is an easy, one-size-fits-all answer. There isn't ! Some women need or want HRT, some don't . When it comes to hormone replacement, the science we look to for answers is inconsistant, influenced by market forces, and confusing to researchers, doctors, and patients alike. The blessing is that this dilemma forces us to tune in more fully to our inner wisdom, and to make our choices in full partnership with our intuition and intellect. This approach is the essence of feminine wisdom.

The Holistic Approach

The diet : These guidlines are also appropriate for the prevention of heart disease and osteoporosis.
In various societies, older women traditionally eat certain foods to remedy menopausal side effects. In the South Seas, for example, once a day women of menopausal age eat papaya, which contains phetoestrogens. Studies are beginning to show that these plant compounds can be helpful in menopause. Traditional diets in Japan also are rich in phetoestrogens.
According to Dr. Konenberg, " studies of Japanese women with traditional Japanese diets show that these women's bodies contains levels of plant estrogens one hundred to one thousand times the level found in western women. It may be that the reason that these women don't have hot flashes is that they are eating a lot of weakly estrogenic substances all the time". She continues, " these women also have less incidence of breast cancer, and one of the reasons that has been suggested for this, is that there are other things in the plant foods that are anti-carcinogenic". In these studies, the higher estrogen levels were associated with intake of soy beans, soy products such as tofu, miso and boiled beans.
As much as 50% of the Japanese diet contains phetoestrogen foods, whereas westerners eat 10% or less. We really have very little dietary support as far as suppression of hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. Foods in the western diet that do contain phetoestrogens are apples ,carrots ,yams ,green beans ,peas ,potatoes ,red beans , brown rice ,whole wheat ,rye , and sesame seeds. Though all these foods may contain 1/400th or less estrogen than a single dose of hormone supplement, the thing that people have not really thought through is that the metabolism of a stronger dose of something may not be well incorporated into the body's sytem. If you have a steady drum beat instead of a thunder clap, it may actually do much more for the body.

Legumes are excellent sources of minerals needed by menopausal women containing calcium , magnesium , and potassium . There are also high in Iron and in B complex, nutrients important for the health of the liver, which play a role in the metabolism of estrogen. Seeds and nuts are also good sources of calcium, magnesium and potassium, and seeds such as flax seeds are midly estrogenic. Seeds are also high in essential fatty acids (Omega-3). A deficiency in these oils may be responsible in part for the drying of the skin, hair, vaginal tissues, and other mucous membranes that occur with menopause: good sources are flax seeds and pumkin seeds. The average healthy adult requires only four teaspoons per day of the essential oils in their diet, but menopausal women with extremely dry skin may need up to 2 to 3 tablespoons per day until the symptoms improve.
