Anorexia Nervosa

This is a scary illness both for the person caught up in the problem as well as for their friends and family. It is also one that is very hard to admit to, again for those on both sides of the coin.

Anorexia in the bluntest terms is the intentional starvation of the body. This sounds surprising simple but eating disorders are not as simple as they seem, it is NOT just about food. It is not just about being Skinny, it is not just about having bad parents or low self esteem, it is not just about attention or about rebellion. It is all of these and none of these. Wow did that just confuse you? I hope so because that confusion is an inherent part of the disorder. Even eating disorder specialists feel that confusion everyday. 

Anorexia takes many shapes and forms, it IS possible to be overweight and anorexic, there is no need to be a skeleton to be anorexic. Anorexia is a fatal illness if untreated, and there have been many cases of death of anorexics who were of normal weights and even overweight. In fact on a personal note, when I first got sick before I was underweight at all I was already in grave physical danger and was hospitalized for abnormal heart rhythms and extremely low blood pressure, unbalanced electrolyte...the list goes on and on... and I was the same weight I am now. Average for my height. So I will just reiterate that Anorexia does not always = skeleton.

Self starvation is a very very dangerous and little understood behaviour. If you or someone you love is currently caught in this behaviour get help before it is too late.
