Christmas Scents
The treasured Christmas scents return to me each December
Tangy spices thrown randomly in a bowl for atmosphere
Bayberry candles perched on every available surface
The tree, even the musty ornament box, taking me home.
Mother's persimmon pudding, baking in the oven
Chilu bubbling on the stove, steaming up the windows
Nuts and pepermint, dates and chocolate fudge
Filling my nose, making my mouth water, taking me home.
Clean, cold air invading the room
As father comes in from the yard, shucking his coat
The aroma of the heater as it warms my toes
Hot popcorn, made to string, eaten instead, taking me home.
Perfumes, aftershaves. soaps and shampoos
Tell me it is time for midnight service
When the candles are lit and the room has a glow
Scents of family and Christmas are there, taking me home.
