Footloose
�?/STRONG>I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your word.�?
(Psalm 119:101).
In the 1984 movie Footloose that launched his career, Kevin Bacon played a rebellious teenager in a strict small town who loves to dance because his feet are so loose. God wants to remind us in His Word that we should dance in the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1) and that our feet should not be the furthest thing from our minds. “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.�?(Psalm 91:11-12). God will give us real Satisfaction, He will not allow our feet to dash against the Rolling Stones and He will keep us from falling.
David’s enemies prepared a net against him (Psalm 57:6), but David trusted God and was plucked out of trouble. “My eyes are ever toward the LORD, for He shall pluck my feet out of the net.�?(Psalm 25:15). We are to trust in God and let our eyes be towards Him as we spend time in His Word so that He will be our confidence, and He will keep our feet from being caught in the dangerous nets of life (Proverbs 3:26). We can even enjoy the shagadelic comedies of Austin Powers, but we are only groovy when we avoid Dr Evil and Mini Me, for God says “do not turn to the right or to the left, remove your foot from evil.�?(Proverbs 4:27).
“If I say, ‘My foot slips,�?Your mercy, O LORD, will hold me up.�?(Psalm 94:18) We can be Footloose because God will hold us up if we slip, but we are warned to remove our feet from evil to secure God’s blessing for “blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.�?(Psalm 1:1-3)
David said, “But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled; my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.�?(Psalm 73:2-3). But David understood their painful end (Psalm 73:17) and kept his feet from evil by the Word of God. “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path.�?(Psalm 119:105). It is God’s way or the highway. We can’t do it our way because we are not at Burger King, and we can have a Whopper of a time if we learn to speak, meditate on, and DO the Word of God, so that our ways will prosper “This Book of the Law [the Word of God] shall not depart from your mouth; but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.�?(Joshua 1:8).
