Hope Floats

?/STRONG>Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.?(Psalm 42:11)

In the 1998 Sandra Bullock movie Hope Floats, a divorced woman and daughter moved back to her hometown in Smithville, Texas where she was rekindled by an old flame Harry Connick Jr. In the Bible, we find that not only hope floats, but that hope springs eternal. When David was down and out, he remembered his confidence was not in Bob Hope but in God, the ground for his hope. God would help him and he would again praise His God for His faithfulness.

Psalm 71:14 further says “But I will hope continually, and will praise You yet more and more.?David’s faith in God allowed him to hope continually, and he expected continuous blessings from God, with one deliverance after another. David had the blessed assurance that God would intervene. Because of God’s faithfulness in the past, David was confident that he would yet praise God more and more as his blessings increased. We are to not just hope in God, but to abound in hope for Romans 15:13 says “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.?BR>
God further reminds us in Psalm 119:116, “Uphold me according to Your Word, that I may live; and do not let me be ashamed of my hope.?God never wants us to be disappointed or ashamed of our hope. We must never feel let down as long as God is holding us up with His everlasting arms. When we rely on our flesh, we will get frustrated and our hope will become empty and vain. The Psalmist pleaded for the grace of God to keep him from falling or failing, for he needed God’s grace to withstand any afflictions, resist all temptations, and overcome his enemies. He knew that he could only prosper through God's redeeming power which gave him hope.

As long as we obey the Word of God, turn away from evil and continue in doing good, we can count on never being ashamed of our hope. We will never be disappointed even if things are falling apart around us. God will make a way where there appears to be no way as we take our eyes off our limited resources and look up to the majestic presence of God. So when someone asks how we’re doing, respond boldly in faith as we abound in hope, “I am rejoicing in hope.?(Romans 12:12)
