Tything In the days of Melchizedek, A long time ago, Came old father Abraham, His tything to show. One tenth of the spoils, That came from that war, Was given as an example, Of the unwritten law. The Prince of Salem, A priest without end, Received from our ancestor, The portion he did rend. The first part of all things, We must offer our God, The first from the womb, And the best from the sod. We cannot love God, Least we first love our brother, And when we give to the Almighty, We make provision for another. God is not man, That He can be out given, For all things He created, And he keeps us all livin'. To give back one tenth, Is not really so much, When our life belongs to Jesus, And is not ours as such. For down on our Knees, We once promised Him all, When we repented our ways, And answered His call. So the cost of the kingdom, To us is really quite cheap, When we look up to the cross, On Golgotha's old heap. And think of our Father, Who once gave His all, By sending our Lord Jesus, To redeem when we fall. William Alexander Smith |
