(  a prose poem)

..In 1964, everyone in Berlin Brigade was far behind enemy lines, and if you got leave time, you would ride the Brit train out toward Helmstedt, and if you had motorcycles, they would ride cargo car, so you could spend time drinking high class scotch whiskey.

The train slowed to a stop in Helmstedt and it seemed a thousand Russian soldiers were waiting there, in a menacing display  of stern faces and stong character and we were amazed.....but not afraid.

Down with the window!....... and as I held a pack of Camels up and smiled......., the Russians smiled back, and nodded.

We threw five packs out toward their feet.......and  Five Russians are left standing and smiling ..each with a pack of Camels between their boots and a wink and a smile on their face.

Soldier diplomacy beats the 'boots' off  of Government...everytime.

...and that;s why they called it a 'Duty Train.'

For accuracy, replace Helmstedt with Magdeburg.  Helmstedt was the offload into WGermany.  The Camels were smoked in Magdeburg...
