Late on Sunday night I had to shoot my old hunting dog, Tu.  He was having a stroke or a seizure or something like that and I thought it was the best thing to do. Lord knows I  did'nt want to do it, but I guess it was the right time.

TU

A while ago
Me and you
Tu
Chasin wild boars
On bushy slopes
Or sittin still
With me watchin that nose of yours
Tell us which way to go

And you
Tu
bailin hogs
With no fear
all strength
barking and holding
so I could catch up

After..
Tu
You would sit
with my young kids
hangin off your ears
lookin in your mouth
and never once , ever
did you growl or bite.

So strong and tough
yet so soft and gentle,
thats you
Tu

So, farewell old mate
gonna miss watchin you
lyin in the sun..
your paw on my leg
that bark I know so well
You were a good dog
Tu

Ned, sorry to hear this Bro. I know it's hard to loose a friend that way, but sometimes it IS necessary. Tu's in a better place and you've still got the memories.

Rough deal ned, been there, done that...more than once. On the practical side, you know what qualities you are looking for in finding a replcement

I am so sorry. The pain one goes thru when losing an animal is compared to the loss of a dear old friend.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I really appreciate it.

Y'know I had a bit of a laugh early this morning while driving to work.  Rubbish collection was today and all these trash bags down the road were ripped open.  And I though well Tu, you ain't gonna get blamed this time

I can sympathise with you Wiz, just make it as quick and painless as you can.
I talked to the veterinarian couple of weeks ago and got a whole lot of bulldust about euthanising, counselling , how much its gonna cost,  do I want a cremation? , do I want the ashes?
I thought ...I will just do it myself when the time comes.
