An e-mail snafu has led to the leak of Microsoft's decision to shutter its MSN Groups service, according to LiveSide.net. It's not a surprise, as MSN Groups was one of the last vestiges of Microsoft's Web services strategy pre-Windows Live.

MSN Groups will be closing on February 21, 2009. It'll be replaced with a new service, Windows Live Groups, which debuts on November 17.

Here's the catch: The LiveSide post indicates MSN Groups will not be migrating to Windows Live Groups; the new Windows Live service will be different enough so that the transition wouldn't be a clean one. Instead, the LiveSide post says that existing MSN Groups will transition to community site Multiply--in other words, Multiply is effectively acquiring MSN Groups from Microsoft.

Representatives from Multiply, which said earlier this month that it has reached 10 million registered users, confirmed the news. Microsoft representatives released a longer statement: "It is true that we are planning to close the MSN Groups service on February 21, 2009 and will offer you the opportunity to move your group to our new partner service, Multiply. We understand the importance of keeping your group together, so we partnered with Multiply to create a migration process that moves your group to their service to preserve your online community and its history.

Thanks Donna.  I've posted this sad news in a few groups.  I have looked at Multiply & it's more like facebook & 'bloggy'.  Not sure how groups like this would work over there.  Might have to find an alternative or wait to see what Live groups is going to be all about.

Bad news travels fast - so far all of my groups that I have visited advise something to the effect that msn will pull the plug on groups in Feb of next year.  Hope it does not
lead to the situation in Wilmington, SC which preceeded the rest of my country in going digital for TV broadcasts.  My findings show 20 to 25% of the people now are unable to get any TV broadcasts without cable or dish even if they have antennas or
boxes like I bought that do not work with my rabbbit ear set that I am taking to recycle dump this morning.

typo Wilmington, North Carolina - example TV stations WWAY for abc and WECT for nbc.

Went to another of my groups and was told today October 17 is the starting date for the beginning of the end of msn groups.  Noticed that all my groups now have opening message for discussions and one must click one by one for any replies, or re:...  unlike scrolling to see comment after comment

Gart dont believe everything you read. They havent even officially announced it yet & the emails suggest Feb 2009 & that everything will remain the same until then!

What I meant, was not to believe what you read about groups being touched from October 17.  It has been confirmed that MSN groups will cease in Feb 2009.

"Between today and February 21, 2009 nothing will change about the MSN Groups service except that we will remove the option to add more storage to your group. Other features will remain until the service is shut down and you can use it the same way you do today until the date of closure."  (this is copied directly from an email received from groups support)

People have already started looking elsewhere to transfer their groups to.  Until the launch of MSN live groups, we cannot tell what format they will be in & whether they will be worth using.  Until then we should just maybe sit tight.

I just spoke with a representative from MSN concerning my hotmail account i paid for to get extra storage. This is the update he gave me.

In the long term we believe that closing the service is the best way to continue to offer innovative, best of breed
services that help you stay in touch with the people you care about. We plan to launch a new Groups service this fall,
but unlike MSN Groups, Windows Live Groups will focus on offering a place for small groups to collaborate. A service
for small, medium and large groups is available now with our online partner, Multiply.
Hope this helps...

Thanks for the info. We are already looking into the alternatives, but I think Multiply has been ruled out so far. Hopefully Kramer will find a new home in the new year. It will take a lot of work to move the groups elsewhere unfortunately

Thanks for your input Lillians. I have a test group in Aimoo & am getting used to the settings etc there. The people who are testing it with me are liking what they see so far :o)

As info one of my groups for those of us over 50 is moving to Aimoo; another to Delphi.  I am at Gart2.multiply.com but use it mostly cause of a few contacts that visit my site and share stuff if I go to theirs.  Many of those in other groups who comment say Multiply is not the way they want to go.  Staying tuned.....
