What is Meditation?

Meditation is our attempt to discover our inner self, a place beyond the usual workings of the intellectual mind. When we experience real meditation we become aware of the infinite within and our own unexpected wealth of divine qualities like peace and inner joy. Many people may have had glimpses of meditation unconsciously. For example whilst walking through nature and being awed by its beauty and magnitude. Others may have been moved by sublime music. At such moments our mind becomes still and we feel a sense there is something greater beyond our usual perceptions. As mysteriously as it came, such experiences may leave, giving only a fleeting glimpse of a feeling that is hard to describe. Meditation is an attempt to make such experiences permanent and also deepen and expand our own consciousness.

People may take up meditation for a variety of reasons which could just be curiosity, a desire for more relaxation, peace of mind, or help in sleeping. Others may take to meditation from a feeling of disenchantment with the outer life. If practised with sincerity and regularity, meditation can give us relaxation and peace of mind but it can also offer more than we ever expected. Through meditation we can expedite our soul’s inner journey and we can become more aware of our own spiritual dimension.

"Meditation is absolutely necessary for those who want to have a better and more fulfilling life. If you feel that you are satisfied with what you have and what you are then you need not enter into the field of meditation. But if you feel that there is a barren desert deep inside your heart, then meditation is the answer. Meditation will give you inner joy and peace of mind."

To begin meditation we need to learn the art of concentration. Here concentration is different to mental concentration. Concentration for meditation means the ability to be aware of only one thing at a time. We need to keep the mind one pointed and focused only on our meditation exercise. If you try sitting still for 5 minutes and observe your own thoughts you will realise how difficult this is at first. However spiritual teachers who have mastered the art of meditation have offered a variety of techniques to help control the mind. If practised these can change the inherent tendency of the mind to wander and we can enter to silent meditation.

Meditation has significant benefits, these do not materialise in one or two sessions, they are slowly accumulated over time as we deepen our own meditation practise. These benefits will include a more focused and calm mind, greater dynamism and better sleep. In addition we will find ourselves less worried by minor irritants because we can more easily detach ourselves from these negative thoughts.
Some people associate meditation with the Kundalini energies, and psychic powers, however these are really like diversions on the path. The real goal of meditation is peace of mind and positive changes to our inner life.

To start meditation is very easy. Just take 5 or 10 minutes somewhere quiet. Begin by focusing on your breathing and let your thoughts drift away, if thoughts come pay no attention to them. Next try to feel yourself diving deep within away from the mind. If you like you can visualise a beautiful garden or vast ocean. Then for 10 minutes try to hold this awareness with one pointed concentration. If external noises come do not let them distract you, they will always be there. Just concentrate on your breathing. Even if this first experience is not fruitful keep persevering for with each try we will be able to add to our capacity and gradually learn the art of meditation.

Normally,  thoughts are flowing through our mind every second, and it is not possible to stay at one point for any length of time, not to speak of remaining without any thought. Therefore, the first step in meditation is concentration. In concentration we learn to direct all our attention onto one particular point and to forget everything else.

Meditation exercises are the second step. While we fix our attention on something very small while we concentrate, in meditation we start with something small and then we expand into all directions. Often certain imaginations and pictures are used for meditation exercises.

In Mantra-meditation we repeat certain syllables again and again, until the vibration of the mantra, its deeper meaning comes slowly to the fore.

Apart from such exercises there are many little things that help if we do them right: What we eat has an influence, how we dress, where and with whom we meditate, what we do before and after meditation, what music we listen to and so on.

Posture during Meditation

When meditating, it is important to keep the spine straight and erect, and to keep the body relaxed. If the body is stiff, the divine and fulfilling qualities that are flowing in and through it during meditation will not be received. The body should not be uncomfortable, either. While you are meditating, your inner being will spontaneously take you to a comfortable position, and then it is up to you to maintain it. The main advantage of the lotus position is that it helps keep the spinal cord straight and erect. But it is not comfortable for most people. So the lotus position is not at all necessary for proper meditation. Many people meditate very well while seated in a chair.

Some people do physical exercises and postures. These exercises, called Hatha Yoga, relax the body and bring peace of mind for a short period. If someone is physically very restless and cannot stay still for more than a second, then these exercises will definitely help. But Hatha Yoga is not at all necessary. There are many aspirants who can just sit and make their minds calm and quiet without doing any Hatha Yoga.

It is not at all advisable to meditate while lying down, even for those who have been meditating for several years. Those who try to meditate while lying down will enter into the world of sleep or into a kind of inner drift or doze. Furthermore, while you are lying down, your breathing is not as satisfactory as it is when you are in a sitting position, since it is not conscious or controlled. Proper breathing is very important in meditation.

Breathing Exercises

1. Breathing into the heart centre

Please breathe in and hold your breath for a couple of seconds, and feel that you are holding the breath, which is life-energy, in your heart centre. This will help you to develop your inner meditation capacity.


2. Becoming aware of the breath

When you sit down to meditate, try to breathe in as slowly and quietly as possible, so that if somebody placed a tiny thread in front of your nose it would not move at all. And when you breathe out, try to breathe out even more slowly than you breathed in. If possible, leave a short pause between the end of your exhalation and the beginning of your inhalation. If you can, hold your breath for a few seconds. But if that is difficult, do not do it. Never do anything that will make you physically uncomfortable during meditation.


3 Breathing in peace and joy

The first thing that you have to think of when practising breathing techniques is purity. When you breathe in, if you can feel that the breath is coming directly from God, from Purity itself, then your breath can easily be purified. Then, each time you breathe in, try to feel that you are bringing infinite peace into your body. The opposite of peace is restlessness. When you breathe out, try to feel that you are expelling the restlessness within you and also the restlessness that you see all around you. When you breathe this way, you will find restlessness leaving you. After practising this a few times, please try to feel that you are breathing in power from the universe, and when you exhale, feel that all your fear is coming out of your body. After doing this a few times, try to feel that you are breathing in infinite joy and breathing out sorrow, suffering and melancholy.


4. Cosmic energy

Feel that you are breathing in not air but cosmic energy. Feel that tremendous cosmic energy is entering into you with each breath, and that you are going to use it to purify your body, vital, mind and heart. Feel that there is not a single place in your being that is not being occupied by the flow of cosmic energy. It is flowing like a river inside you, washing and purifying your entire being. Then, when you breathe out, feel that you are breathing out all the rubbish inside you—all your undivine thoughts, obscure ideas and impure actions. Anything inside your system that you call undivine, anything that you do not want to claim as your own, feel that you are exhaling.

This is not the traditional yogic pranayama, which is more complicated and systematised, but it is a most effective spiritual method of breathing. If you practise this method of breathing, you will soon see the results. In the beginning you will have to use your imagination, but after a while you will see and feel that it is not imagination at all but reality. You are consciously breathing in the energy which is flowing all around you, purifying yourself and emptying yourself of everything undivine. If you can breathe this way for five minutes every day, you will be able to make very fast progress. But it has to be done in a very conscious way, not mechanically.


5. Total breathing

When you reach a more advanced stage, you can try to feel that your breath is coming in and going out through every part of your body—through your heart, through your eyes, through your nose and even through your pores. Right now you can breathe only through your nose or your mouth, but a time will come when you will be able to breathe through every part of your body. Spiritual Masters can breathe even with their nose and mouth closed. When you have perfected this spiritual breathing, all your impurity and ignorance will be replaced by God's light, peace and power.

Imagine that you can see your breath entering your nose and slipping slowly and silently down into your lungs. Feel your breath is filling your chest cavity, energising your entire body. Keep your awareness in the centre of your chest. Imagine that you are in the centre of your own chest. Observe your breath coming in and bring with it all its positive energy. Then watch as your breath is exhaled carrying away negative feelings and emotions and even thoughts.  Try to stay centred in your chest all the way through this exercise - keep your awareness in the centre of your chest.

    *      Feel your awareness is in the centre of your chest.
    *      Observe your breathing in a relaxed and detached way.
    *      Do not force your breathing.

Purpose of this exercise.

To slow, calm and relax your breathing �?this in turn helps to calm and quieten the mind, to prepare yourself for meditation. It is important that our breathing is calm and relaxed before we attempt to focus on the next level which is single pointed concentration. We need to spend a few minutes “letting go�?of our hectic outer activities and the impact they have on our mental state. A breathing exercise is perfect for this.

There are many different breathing exercises, this particular one also serves to help us become aware of a more subtle space within ourselves �?the centre of the chest houses the Heart centre. The Heart centre is a sweet and peaceful space which we will use in subsequent meditation exercise.

Exercises in Concentration
 
1. The dot

If you want to develop the power of concentration, then here is an exercise you can try. First wash your face and eyes properly with cold water. Then make a black dot on the wall at eye level. Stand facing the dot, about ten inches away, and concentrate on it. After a few minutes, try to feel that when you are breathing in, your breath is actually coming from the dot, and that the dot is also breathing in, getting its breath from you. Try to feel that there are two persons: you and the black dot. Your breath is coming from the dot and its breath is coming from you.

In ten minutes, if your concentration is very powerful, you will feel that your soul has left you and entered into the black dot on the wall. At this time try to feel that you and your soul are conversing. Your soul is taking you into the soul's world for realisation, and you are bringing the soul into the physical world for manifestation. In this way you can develop your power of concentration very easily. But this method has to be practised. There are many things which are very easy with practice, but just because we do not practise them we do not get the result.


2. Vision and reality

Another exercise you can try is this. First make a very small circle on the wall at eye-level, and inside it make a black dot. It should be black; not blue or red or any other colour. Then stand facing the wall, about three and a half feet away, and focus your attention on the circle. Your eyes should be relaxed and half-open. Let the force of your concentration come from the middle of your forehead. After three or four minutes open your eyes fully and try to feel that, from head to foot, you are all eyes. Your whole physical existence has become nothing but vision, and that vision is focussed on the dot inside the circle. Then start making the object of your concentration smaller. After a few seconds try to feel that your whole body has become as tiny as the dot on the wall. Try to feel that the dot is another part of your own existence. Then enter into the dot, pierce through it and go to the other side. From the other side of the dot, look back and see your own body. Your physical body is on one side, but on the strength of your concentration you have sent your subtle body to the other side of the dot. Through your subtle body you are seeing your physical body, and through your physical body you are seeing your subtle body.

When you began to concentrate, your physical body became all vision. At that time the dot was your reality. When you entered into the dot, then vision and reality became one. You were the vision and you were also the reality. When you looked back at yourself from the dot, the process was reversed. At that time you became the vision outside yourself, and the place to which you returned—your body—was the reality. Then, the vision and the reality became one again. When you can see the vision and the reality in this way, your concentration is absolutely perfect. When your power of concentration can bring you to the other side of the point which you were calling reality, at that time your whole existence will be far beyond both vision and reality. And when you can feel that you have transcended your vision and your reality, you will have boundless power.


3. My heart-friend

Just as you can concentrate on the tip of your finger, or on a candle or any other material object, you can also concentrate on your heart. You may close your eyes or look at a wall, but all the time you are thinking of your heart as a dear friend. When this thinking becomes most intense, when it absorbs your entire attention, then you have gone beyond ordinary thinking and entered into concentration. You cannot look physically at your spiritual heart, but you can focus all your attention on it. Then gradually the power of your concentration enters into the heart and takes you completely out of the realm of the mind.

If you do not have purity in abundant measure, if countless earthly desires are in possession of the heart, then before concentrating on the heart you should invoke purity. Purity is the feeling of having a living shrine deep in the inmost recesses of your heart. When you feel the divine presence of an inner shrine, automatically you are purified. At that time your concentration on the heart will be most effective.


4. The heartbeat of life

Some seekers like to concentrate on their heartbeat. If you want to do this, do not be afraid that the heart will stop and you will die. If you want to be a real hero in your spiritual life, you can practise concentrating on your heartbeat. This is the golden opportunity for you to enter into the endless life. Each time you hear the sound of your heartbeat, immediately feel there your infinite, immortal life.


5. The inner flower

For this exercise you will need a flower. With your eyes half closed and half open, look at the entire flower for a few seconds. While you are concentrating, try to feel that you yourself are this flower. At the same time, try to feel that this flower is growing in the inmost recesses of your heart. Feel that you are the flower and you are growing inside your heart.

Then, gradually try to concentrate on one particular petal of the flower. Feel that this petal which you have selected is the seed-form of your reality-existence. After a few minutes, concentrate on the entire flower again, and feel that it is the Universal Reality. In this way go back and forth, concentrating first on the petal—the seed-form of your reality—and then on the entire flower—the Universal Reality. While you are doing this, please try not to allow any thought to enter into your mind. Try to make your mind absolutely calm, quiet and tranquil.

After some time, please close your eyes and try to see the flower that you have been concentrating on inside your heart. Then, in the same way that you concentrated on the physical flower, kindly concentrate on the flower inside your heart, with your eyes closed.

Concentration Exercise


Be seated on a chair or on the floor with your back straight. Look at a burning candle in front of you. Direct all your attention onto the candle flame, and fix your eyes onto the flame.

Feel that your breath is coming from the candle when you breathe in, and when you breath out, it is going back into the candle. Only you and the candle flame exist, nothing else.

Then close your eyes and try to see the candle flame with your inner eye as clearly as if you had your eyes open. Do not change the image of the candle, and do not think of anything else. When you loose your concentration, start the exercise again from the beginning.

Relaxation Exercise

Before each meditation exercise it is worth spending a few minutes relaxing the body. One way is to imagine/feel the tension moving out of your muscles and down your body so that all the tension finally runs through your feet and into the ground.

Sit with a straight back, but do not overdo it so that the back becomes tense. Concentrate on focusing your awareness/attention on specific muscles of your body. Starting with your head, feel the tension drain downward out of your face. Move your awareness down the neck �?imagine that you can push the tension downward and that the muscles relax and soften. Continue down the body, especially work on the shoulders and stomach muscles. Keep moving the tension downward until you reach your feet. At this point imagine all the accumulated tension is forced out of your feet and into the floor. Now bring your awareness to the centre of your chest. Imagine that there is a vast sea of peace in the centre of your chest. Spend a few minutes enjoying the tranquillity within yourself.

    *      Relaxing helps us to ‘centre�?and to feel that we are in the present moment

Exercises using Mantra

Mantra, Music and Silence

Music and Silence

�?Silence is the nest and music is the bird. The bird leaves the nest early in the morning and returns to the nest in the evening. Similarly, in the spiritual world, divine music comes from the inmost soul of silence.�?/P>

When we listen to soulful music our Heart is inspired and awakened this lifts our consciousness and prepares us to dive within to experience the inner silence.

�?When we listen to soulful music, or when we ourselves play soulful music, immediately our inner existence climbs up high, higher, highest. It climbs up and enters into something beyond. This Beyond is constantly trying to help us, guide us, mould us and shape us into our true transcendental image, our true divinity. When we hear soulful music, or when we play a soulful piece of music, we feel a kind of inner thrill in our entire existence, from the soles of our feet to the crown of our head. A river is flowing through us, a river of consciousness, and this consciousness is all the time illumined.�?nbsp;                  


Mantra & Chanting

In a similar way chanting helps create the right conditions within ourselves so we can access our inner silence. Mantras can also establish spiritual qualities within the practitioner.

Chanting a mantra over many times creates a vibration within and around the person chanting. We use mantras to create a specific vibration, still the mind and become absorbed in the consciousness of the mantra. Another way to use a mantra is to chant it aloud and then silently and finally not at all but instead ‘hear�?and ‘feel�?it quietly reverberate within you �?this quietening down of the mantra absorbs the mind, and allows you to enter the stillness and silence within.

Chanting AUM

- AUM is said to be underlying sound of the universe. If we go very deep within during meditation we will hear AUM the cosmic sound with our inner ear.

To attain a quite mind try chanting AUM a set number of times every day. You could choose 100 or 500. Chanting a mantra will give the mind something to focus on and improve our concentration. If you prefer you could choose another mantra, for example you might like to focus on a particular quality such as "Peace" or "Love" by chanting these mantras you can feel like you are energising your system with peace or love.

The important thing when chanting mantras is not to do it mechanically like a robot. You should feel the need to concentrate only on this mantra and have the feeling you are bringing this quality to the fore.

Visualisation Exercise - Heart Rose

“The Heart-rose.  Kindly imagine a flower inside your heart. Suppose you prefer a rose. Imagine that the rose is not fully blossomed; it is still a bud. After you have meditated for two or three minutes, please try to imagine that petal by petal the flower is blossoming. See and feel the flower blossoming petal by petal inside your heart. Then, after five minutes, try to feel that there is no heart at all; there is only a flower inside you called ‘heart�? You do not have a heart, but only a flower. The flower has become your heart or your heart has become a flower.

After seven or eight minutes, please feel that this flower–heart has covered your whole body. Your body is no longer here; from your head to your feet you can feel the fragrance of the rose. If you look at your feet, immediately you experience the fragrance of the rose. If you look at your knee, you experience the fragrance of the rose. If you look at your hand, you experience the fragrance of the rose. Everywhere the beauty, fragrance and purity of the rose have permeated your entire body."

“To reach the spiritual heart you have to feel that you do not have a mind, you do not have arms, you do not have legs, you have only the heart. Then you have to feel you do not have the heart, but that you are the heart. When you can feel that you are the heart and nothing else, then easily you will be able to reach your spiritual heart during your meditation.�?nbsp;

    *      Bring the flower into your Heart Centre; identify with it so you do not feel any separation from it.

The Benefits of Meditation
 

1. Inner Peace

Meditation gives many benefits, but the most significant benefit is that of inner peace. Meditation can give us inner peace, because we learn to stop the worries and anxieties that usually fill our mind. The aim of meditation is to develop a silent mind; we do not allow any thought to enter. When we can develop a perfectly still mind we will feel inner peace. Inner peace is not just about silence. In meditation we feel the dynamic and fulfilling presence of peace; it is a peace that cannot be comprehended by the mind, it is a peace we wish to share with others.

2. A Positive View of the World.

When we live in the mind we inevitably see the teeming imperfections of the world and other people. The faults of the world may seem unending, but we can never get satisfaction by focusing only on the failings of others. When we meditate we become aware of the good that underlies the world. Meditation spontaneously encourages us to have a positive view of the world. This is because in meditation we develop a oneness with others; we extend our consciousness and do not feel separated from other people.


3. Inner Happiness.

The happiness we gain from meditation is different to the fleeting pleasure we experience from the fulfilment of desires. The inner happiness of meditation is not dependent on outer circumstances; it is an inner joy that comes from within.

4. Health benefits.

Meditation has been shown to give various health benefits. For example, stress can lead to raised blood pressure and heart problems. Through meditation we can let go of our stress and anxieties, this has shown by various studies to improve health. When practised properly meditation reduces stress and makes participants feel better.

5. Dynamism

Meditation can energise our inner and outer being. People may feel that meditation is a retreat from the world, but meditation can also inspire us in the world of activity. Meditation gives us clarity and inner dynamism; we can use the inner benefits of meditation to help our outer activities. Meditation is about self-transcendence; in meditation we go beyond the limitations of the mind. This philosophy and application of self-transcendence can be extended to aspects of our physical self transcendence.


6. Little Things do Not Disturb us.

It is the nature of the mind that we allow small irritations to disturb our peace of mind. It can seem foolish but even minor infractions become a major source of concern. Meditation teaches us to put the mind in its proper place; we learn to quieten the mind and be detached from useless thoughts.


7. Discover our true identity.

Meditation is a process of inner discovery. Meditation teaches us that we are not just the body. When we meditate on our spiritual heart we are becoming closer to our soul. Through meditation the divine qualities of our soul become a living reality. We learn of our inner self, and this can give greater meaning to life.


8. Concentration

In Meditation we learn how to develop concentration and focus on one thing at a time. When we concentrate and put all our attention on one object only, we develop tremendous focus. The concentration we develop in meditation can be used for other activities such as work and study.

Benefits of Meditation

When giving meditation classes, I am often asked what are the benefits of meditation. It is an interesting question and there are a few things worth mentioning.

In meditation we are trying to quieten the mind and detach ourselves from our everyday thoughts and emotions. By sitting still we can feel a greater relaxation. Even if we don’t stop our thoughts completely, by sitting quietly, we can began to feel more relaxed, also just focusing on our breathing helps alleviate symptoms of stress.

However, if we can develop our practise of meditation it can offer more than just relaxation. The nature of the mind is to offer judgement, criticism and analysis. When we are constantly judging things, ourselves and other people it is difficult to have peace of mind. The nature of the mind is to feel a sense of separativity. However, meditation enables us to go beyond the intellectual mind and enter into the spiritual heart. The spiritual heart is a term we can use for where our inner self or soul resides. The nature of the heart and soul is not to separate and criticise. The heart by nature identifies and feels a sense of oneness with other people and other things. Real meditation allows us to identify with our inner self and thus will not be subject to our usual myriad of never ending thoughts. Instead we will feel an expansion in our consciousness, we will feel inner peace and inner joy. The unusual feature of this kind of happiness is that it does not depend upon outer circumstances; this happiness is self generated, it comes from our own souls spontaneous joy.

True inner joy is self - created.
It does not depend on outer circumstances.
A river is flowing in and through you carrying the message of joy.
This divine joy is the sole purpose of life.

From Delight we came into existence.
In Delight we grow.
At the end of our journey’s close,
Into Delight we retire.


This passage is quite striking but maybe our instinctive reaction is to feel is how can this be? Rarely do we feel inner delight from life. However, meditation is a most effective tool that helps peel away our layers of ignorance so we can once more bring to the fore the light of our soul.


Benefits of Meditation over Time

Meditation is not like taking an instant fix. If we sit down to play the piano we cannot expect to play a Rachmaninov concerto at our first sitting, it takes practise. In this sense meditation is no different; the more we practise meditation then the greater the benefits that will occur. People often find that their first efforts of meditation are not particularly productive; we become aware that our mind is very restless (some liken it a mad monkey) However, if we practise exercises of concentration and meditation then our mind will lose its strength and we will begin to attain greater peace of mind.
But, meditation it is not just about spending a lot of time sitting still. There is nobody who will reward you for sitting in a chair for many hours every day. The most important thing is to meditate with enthusiasm and intensity. If we can focus wholeheartedly on our meditation then we will make the fastest progress.

Benefits of Meditation in our Daily Life

Another question often asked is whether meditation is practical?  If we can attain peace of mind in our morning meditation then this peace will to some extent remain with us for the rest of the day. When we become more aware of our inner source of peace we will also be able to easily detach ourselves from minor irritations and minor problems. The mind can be tricky and exaggerate small problems into seemingly large and unconquerable problems. However, the fruits of meditation give us greater detachment and inner poise, this will naturally percolate into our daily lives, our friends and colleagues will also begin to notice this.


Ultimate Goal of Meditation

We can pursue meditation as far as we want. Many people may be satisfied with meditating for greater relaxation and peace of mind. However, if we want, meditation can be part of a spiritual quest which ultimately leads to the goal of “self realisation�? �?/FONT>nirvana�?or “God Realisation�?This is a concept that has been given various names by different religions and spiritual paths, but in essence “enlightenment�?or “self realisation�?occurs when we lose our sense of attachment to the individual ego and instead we become aware of our real nature which is inseparably one with the transcendental consciousness.

 

Andrew Newberg, a radiologist at the University of Pennsylvania, US, told BBC World Service's Discovery programme:

"I think we are poised at a wonderful time in our history to be able to explore religion and spirituality in a way which was never thought possible."

"Perhaps that [spiritual] sense of reality is more accurate than our scientific everyday sense of reality"
