Animals and Witchcraft

Animals, both physical and mystical, are an important part of many Witches' lives. Witches may chose to work with a variety of ways: As Totem Animals, Familiars and/or Power Animals.

Totem Animals are much more than an animal you like or of which you admire the attributes. They can come to you in your sleeping or waking dreams or during meditations, or even right up to you on the sidewalk. If you will listen, they are here to guide and help you. It is believed that they find you because they have something you need from them, be it power, attributes or a message or a lesson to be learned.

A Familiar is an animal that lives with the witch and assists him/her in magickal works. It may or may not be your Totem Animal. Traditionally cats are associate with witches. Other animals, like dogs, rabbits, horses, mice and snakes can be familiars too. (Some urban witches have birds, squirrel and even cockroaches as familiars).. A familiar represents all the good qualities of that animal and is attune to the witch. It provides the witch with a link to the animal kingdom and the essence of their power.

Power Animals are called upon by a Witch for specific purposes. For example, a witch may choose the animal that lends power to a specific kind of magick, such as a tiger for aggressiveness or courage, a bear for strength, jaguar for speed, snake for medicine, etc.

Animals come to us because they have a lesson we need to learn a power they are willing to share with a friend. They seek to give us a gift of understanding, universal love, energy, and knowledge. In general, animals remind us that we are part of the earth; that each creature has a place; that each creature has a skill of it's own. (Holding Rainbow Warrior Woman)

If a black cat or dog takes up unbidden residence at your door, good fortune will follow!
~Urban Legend~

Cats

Witches and familiars, especially the cat, have long been associated. The similarities between the two are numerous, the strongest being resourcefulness and independence. Regardless of gender, both are called "she". Both have also enjoyed a long history of being deified and maligned in many cultures. Not every cat is a candidate for a familiar and not all witches like cats. There are those times, though, when a witch meets a cat and the magick is so strong the two definitely belong together. Bonding instantly is magickal, however, the relationship must grow with love and respect. It is well known that cats see very well in the dark. Their eyes reflect light which enables them to get a double dose of the available light. A cat can alert you to the presence of another human, animal or bird in the dark. There are rituals to strengthen this psychic bond.

Here, from an eighteenth century Book of Shadows, are instructions for the training of the cat to occult use:

"To be performed every evening, at the same time, in the same place....Adapt the cat to sit close by you, facing in the same direction you face which shall be the place where the moon will rise. Stroke gently but firmly with love in your hands until its purrs and your breathing are heard as one sound. Now you and the cat possess the same will, your eyes will see as its eyes see, and your thoughts will travel together. The time has come to work spells and cast enchantments for power is doubled through the agency of your familiar." Witches All, Grosset & Dunlap, 1977

Cats can be finicky. They also adapt, though they may not like the changes. So if you are a first-time cat friend here are some tips to aid you in your new friendship:

?Cat likes her food served in the same place and preferably at the same time each day.

?Prepare a comfortable resting area for Cat using a box or basket with a pillow or blanket tucked inside. Mint tucked under the bedding helps deter fleas and ticks.

?Cat is very fussy about being clean and will lick her coat many times a day. The fur accumulates in her intestines and creates hairballs which can make her ill. So brush Cat often.

?If you place a collar on Cat, be certain it is expandable. If the collar gets caught on something, Cat could choke. With an expandable collar, she can slip out easily.

?Cat will eat meat. Loves it. She needs other nutrients, however. So choose a good quality canned food and dry food to supplement her diet. Always keep a bowl of fresh water available to her. Watch her for she can easily become a Fat Cat.

?Cat does not like being followed. She will investigate any new premises until she feels comfortable that it's safe.

?Cat will have at least three names and one is her secret. Sound familiar?

?If Cat lives indoors either provide a Cat Door for easy access to the outdoors or a kitty litter box that's always in the same place. The litter box must be emptied about every day to keep her and you happy. Another indoor cat must is a scratching post or your furniture will be her target.

?Last but definitely not least - every once in a while Cat loves a little catnip to roll in and chew. Fresh from your garden is perfection. Dried will do

*******************************************************************

Dogs

My neighbor's dog just barked as if to say, "Remember me!"

Dogs, too, aside from being man's best friend, have journeyed with the Gods and are wonderful familiars. The Goddess, Artemis often traveled with a hound at her side. Although not as finicky as Cat, Dog is protective and loving and giving. Unlike Cat, however, Dog comes in all sizes - small, large and XL.

?Dog's rest area needs to be comfortable and large enough for his size. If he doesn't mind, the mint will work here, too.

?Brush, brush, brush. Dog will always be your friend. Also check for ticks, fleas and other problems

?Dog also appreciates something to chew. I suggest something other than your shoes or table legs.

?Dog needs exercise so plan to walk Dog everyday or allow him to romp in an enclosed yard. A Dog door should come with the yard.

?Dog's diet is important. He'll eat most anything and that's the problem. Choose healthy dog food and treats to keep him happy.

?Identifying collars are slowly being taken over by tattoos these days. You'll need one for a leash if you walk Dog.

?Dog is a devoted and lifelong friend. Treat him like one.

NOTE: Although Cats and Dogs are the most common familiars, many of us have felt an affinity for others of the animal world: A lizard, perhaps. A bird. Some birds can even speak our language. A personal animal totem we've each discovered on our travels. The above spell still holds true for any familiar, with a few changes, no doubt.

The practice of using animals is of Native American, shamanic, and tribal origins. Shamans believe that animals are messengers of the Great Spirit. They are on Earth to teach you something. The Great Spirit shares information with you through visions and dreams using animals to represent what you should do. More and more witches are adapting this concept to their witchcraft practices. This is so because humans have always lived fascinated with animals and their abilities and cunning.

Familiars

I am sure you are familiar with the typical figure of the witch and her black cat. Witches have been using animals to help them with their magickal works for a very long time. It is said that the familiar is the animal that the witch has. The familiar lives with the witch and assists him/her in magickal works. Traditionally cats are associate with witches. Other animals, like dogs, rabbits, horses, and snakes, can be familiars too.

However, your pet is not necessarily your familiar. I have a small fish tank with a Beta fish in my room where I perform most of my magickal works. Even though I love it dearly, my red Betta fish is not my familiar. A familiar represents all the good qualities of that animal, and it is atune to the witch. It provides the witch with a link to the animal kingdom and the essence of their power.

Totem/Power Animals

Witches cannot always work with physical familiars due to many reasons. Perhaps the most common one will be space limitation. Let's face it, who can keep a tiger in his/her house? Sigfried and Roy do NOT count! Therefore, many witches work with their totem animals in the astral.

Totems are not specific animals but mystical powers. Totem animals are sought in the astral world. Witches choose those power animals that closely represent their higher selves. In other words, power animals are chosen by their affinity to the witch.

Power animals are used for specific purposes too. For example, a witch may choose the animal that lends to a specific kind of magick. Maybe the spell needs some "medicine" from the Snake. Some animals are associated with the quarters. Sometimes these energies are activated with the quarter calls. Totem animals are great advicers. So if you are confused about something, call the Wolf!

Most new witches and pagans ask me how many totem animals can one have. Our personality has many facets, so you're likely to have more than one power animal. However, I suggest that you begin to work with one power animal at the time. Visit the animal in the astral world and "talk" to it for a while. Once you get acquantainted with that one, move to the next one.

Bare in mind that totem animals may come and go out of your life as you grow. So do not feel bad if you see the Bear spirit disappear from your life, and instead the Fox spirit appears. There are those power animals that might stay with you for the rest of your life, but others may come and go as need be. Welcome those that come to you for the new experiences they will bring into your life. Bless and thanks those that go.

Who Chooses Who?
Those wiccan and pagans that belong to covens usually have their totem animal(s) chosen either by their mentors or by themselves in a vision quest. The coven might have a totem animal too that only the members of the coven know about. However, this does not mean solitary practicioners cannot have totem animal(s). Solitaires choose their own totem animals.

Sometimes it happens that your totem animal chooses you. There are many reasons why your totem animal picks you. Maybe you need help at a given period of your life. Your totem animal shows up to lend you help, counsel, and support.

About three years ago, on a very hot summer night, I met my very first totem animal. During that summer my life was a living hell. My parents were going through rough times and on the verge of divorce. As for me, I was battling my own demons (figuratively speaking). I could not sleep well at night. Every day I was sinking more and more becoming very depressed. Yet I knew I did not want to take any medications. So I began reading a few books on yoga, and I had even watched a few videos on the topic. Finally one night I was so depressed and afraid of suffering a panic attack that I decided to try one of those simple but relaxing yoga exercises. I went to my room, closed the door behind me, laid on the floor, and started breathing in and out slowly. I had managed to relax quite a bit when suddenly I sensed there was "something" in front of me. Only three people live in my house; my parents and me. I could hear them chatting on the porch, so I knew it was not one of them. My dog was lying beside me for I could "see" him on his bed. I knew there was "something" else in the room for sure now. I kept doing the breathing exercise while trying to ignore whatever else was in front of me. Slowly it began to grow in power and took the shape of big grey wolf. It stood there looking at me for a long time. After a while it walked toward me until it was standing on top of me. It lowered its head until its cold nose touched mine. It felt like its eyes where looking into mine although mine were closed. Finally it lowered its body until it "melted" with mine. I counted from one to ten backwards and opened my eyes. To my surprised, I felt a sense of inner peace for the first time in two months since my world had begun to collapse.

Of course, I did not know anything about totem animals back then. I wrote the whole event as detailed as possible on a sheet of paper and posted the whole story in a wiccan/pagan forum the very next day. LadyHawke (her handle in ISCABBS) was one of the few people who answered my post. She told me that the Wolf spirit had visited me. Thanks to her help, I learned to communicate with my Wolf spirit. The Wolf spirit guided me through those difficult times.

Keep your eyes open for those animals that appear frequently on your path or under unusual circumstances. If you see a raven perched on a tree on your backyard every day, maybe it is more than pure coincidence.

Choose Your Totem Animal
There are several ways that witches and pagans use to find their totem animals.
  1. A particular animal feels good to you.
  2. Your own affinity with an animal.
  3. Medicine cards
  4. Read books on Native American culture and shamanism, and other books on animals and their symbolism in different cultures.
  5. Perform your own ritual
  6. Dreams
  7. Meditative state
  8. Vision quest

Simple Exercises to Find Your Totem Animal

Exercise 1

Research for the local animals in your area. Keep in mind that power animals are not limited to mammals. They can be reptiles, insects, birds, and fish. Make a list and study them carefully. Notice what they eat, their behavior, and their habitat. If you want, visit them in their natural habitat and watch them interact with the environment. Pay special attention to the legends and sayings about them. Remember, "clever as a fox, strong as an ox." You will find some pretty interesting things! Think of their strengths and weaknesses. Recognize these qualities working within you. In this way you will narrow down your choices.

Exercise 2

Take a sheet of paper and make a list of your good qualities. Be honest here! If you want, you can also ask your friends and family to write down all those good qualities they see in you. Sometimes we do not see many of our own good qualities, so this might help you see how others perceive you. Once you have a list of all your good qualities, start researching for those animals that have those qualities that represent your higher self.

Exercise 3

Perhaps this exercise will sound silly, but I found that it helped me more than I thought when I was looking for another totem animal. This is a very simple exercise. All you have to do is look around your room. Yes, you heard me right! Look around your room and notice those posters, figurines, and maybe stuffed animals you got over your bed. Have you noticed you have a tendency to favor certain kind of animal(s)? I know I did when I was starting! I looked around my room and all I saw were tigers in posters, figurines, stuffed animals, and more. Maybe you should consider it. It might be trying to tell you something. Reflect upon these questions:

  • "Why do you like that animal so much?"
  • "What characteristics does that animal have that you can identify yourself with?"
