What are Elementals?

Elementals are spirits that have only one element to their nature, usually air, fire, water or earth, but there are also elemental spirits of akasha.

You can learn a lot by connecting and working with the Elementals around us.  They are the creatures/spirits of the Air, Fire, Water and Earth that surround us all through out Nature in all of her aspects and form. The earth beneath, the sky above, in the seas, lakes and rivers.  In all of these places you will find Elementals at work (and play!); as a single entity, group, several different types working together or in some places Elementals that seem to be a combination.

Elementals are basically Devas and Nature Spirits (sometimes called Fairies) that emanate, interact and are one with a certain element or other creation of Nature. For example, Dryads are a form of Earth Elemental that live in/with/of Trees. In some ways they are the tree but in others are not.  A tree can grow without a Dryad but it isn't whole; it is an empty shell. (this is rare and in places that are very unhealthy or negative where the Devic Realm has fled; I have never found such a place but have heard tell of them. I don't know if they really exist but then I live in nature and near the mountains).

The Elementals are divided up into four categories. I'd like to point out that these are categories that Humankind has created and are limited to our comprehensive abilities. These categories are Air, Fire, Water and Earth. There is also Ether which is...in a nut shell an element of pure Spirit. Angels are of this element. That's an entire article on it's own so we won't be covering that here. Below is a list of their different attributes and some of the names that we have given some of them.

Before we go into the separate attributes of Elementals, let me explain first what I mean by Nature Spirits (Fairies) and Devas (pronounced Daiva, like the name Dave. A Sanskrit word meaning "shining one"). The entire group is called the Devic Realm.  This is the energetic/spirit realm of Nature; earth bound and beyond. They are all Devas but the littler ones are generally called Nature Spirits. The ones that are referred to as Devas are generally the larger ones, the one that are involved in large areas ranging from a back yard to a continent to the biggest Earth Elemental/Deva of all: Gaia. The Earth Mother herself.

I have trouble seeing the whole Devic Realm quite as controlled and regulated as some have described it. I have a hard time conceiving of Nature as being so..... hierarchical. But I feel this is how they appear before us; it makes it easier for us to comprehend them and so interact with them. This has become essential as we become closer and closer to the possibility that man could in fact, destroy the whole thing. Nature/Gaia is trying very hard to get us to listen.

SPIRITS OF AIR - sylphs

Well.... of course we wouldn't last five minutes without it. It is both the most gentle of Elementals and the most powerful. Stand and breath in the morning breeze and greet the Sylphs as you feel them on your face... or hide in your basement during a hurricane. They are both simply Air Elementals. As I said their mythical name is Sylphs. They are in the air and wind around you, the clouds, the smoke of your Smudge and incense, the steam in your bath and in the morning mists of the mountains.

Sylphs are much like Undines in that they are very playful (sometimes too playful!) and are fun and relaxing to watch. Lie down on the ground and watch the wind playing in the trees. Or just lie down in your yard or the nearest park and watch the clouds.

We obviously need air in the garden: plants and insects breath too. But the soil needs to breath as well. Make sure that your soil is "friable"; that is "fluffy" so that air (and water) can get down into it. If your soil is too compact and hard and dry then Air Elementals can't get down there to help the other Elementals.

The Air Elementals correlate with the direction East in the Sacred Circle.

The Breath of Life is of the Air Elementals.

These are elusive creatures, almost as hard to get to know as the gnomes, but only because we must get to know our own minds and our Will before we can even touch them.

Sylphs are lonely beings who would like to be more connected to us if they could, but they live in the space between dimensions and their interactions with us are limited. We can contact them through meditation and conscious journeying, but we must be AWARE to keep our emotions (water energy) in check, or we will not reach them.

When the sylphs finally are contacted, they can bring forth realisations and epiphanies... these beings can make the mind tingle with electricity and mental power... they can literally take you to another level and teach you much about both spiritual evolution and the evolution of the mind. (Geniuses, like Einstein, are often well connected to the air spirits.) But, as with the undines, beware that you do not become addicted - their energy can be intoxicating (like breathing in 100% pure oxygen) to all those who are not balanced and strong within themselves, and they can leave you paraniod, schizophrenic and insane (at least, to the outside world you will appear to be so).

SPIRITS OF FIRE - salamanders

Where would we be without fire? Would we have been able to survive the Ice Age at all?     A good friend of Humans to be sure. Light a match; you have a Fire Elemental, turn on your Furnace; you have a Fire Elemental. They are there over our romantic candle light dinners, camp fires with the kids and cook outs on the grill. Even though we are so dependent on them we completely forget about them most of the time. When was the last time you thanked the flame at the end of a match? :-)

Mythically called Salamanders, Fire Elementals are everywhere. The most powerful on Earth are Volcanoes. The Sun is the most powerful in our solar system and has been viewed as The Father/God/Creator for many religions.  Anything that creates heat is of this Element.

When you are around Fire Elementals you know it. They can make their presence felt very strongly. Ouch! As you know you must work with them very carefully, very respectfully.  When approached properly in these ways they can be very beneficial in many aspects of your life.

In the garden the most obvious need for Fire Elementals is in the compost pile. We need heat to break it down to the right consistency. Fire Elementals are there to help ignite the first spark of life in a seed.

The Fire Elementals correlate with the direction South in the Sacred Circle.

The Spark of Life within us is of the Fire Elementals.

These wonderful elementals live in the present, for the here and now, and therefore, do not have a good memory. They inspire passion, creativity, action that MUST be taken now... but beware you don't let them burn you out!

Invite the salamanders to spice up your love life! They thrive on and give drive to sexual energy; at this time they will happily awaken the kundalini (energy serpent) within you if you let them, starting at the base of your spine and spiralling their fire upwards. Shame of sexuality is a human trait - the spirits no nothing of this, especially not salamanders who will glow with glee if you let them feel your awakening.

Fire spirits are not for everyone because of their temperemental nature, but it is no use getting stressed or annoyed with them... this is simply who they are and is the only way they know how to be (also, they would have no memory of what you are annoyed at them for!) - it is through this dynamic nature that they can teach you of patience, prudence and tolerance of others

SPIRITS OF WATER - undines

What is it....two thirds of the Earth is Water? Something like 90% of our bodies is water.  Apparently we have a need for water. And the Undines, the mythical name for many of the Water Elementals are everywhere. What a sacred thing drinking a glass of water really is.

Undines, Water Nymphs and Sprites. These are the most common Water Elementals. Our mythologies in all cultures are full of stories. The Devas of this element have been elevated to God hood in many cultures. Such as Poseidon to name just one.

Have you ever been to Niagara Falls? I hope you can get there some day if you haven't. This is one of the most powerful Devas I have ever come across. I was raised on Lake Ontario of the Great Lakes and that, along with the Atlantic Ocean are two other of the most powerful I've known. What do I mean by powerful? The best I can answer is they have a very, very strong presence.

Undines like fun. Actually all Elementals like to have fun, it's just sometimes their concept of fun is a little hard for us to understand. But they can be fun for us to watch as well as play with them as well. Just go to the beach and there you both are! You can either get right in the water with them or lie on the beach and simply watch.

We obviously need water in the garden, even it we just rely on the Rain Elementals to do the work for us.

The Water Elementals correlate with the direction West in the Sacred Circle.

The Flow of Life's Blood is of the Water Elementals.

These beings have the longest memory of all the elementals... water HOLDS memory...

Undines remember much of true history, and a few even remember the creation of the world. Work with undines and you work with truth, loyalty, love, bonding and connection with the All... they will teach you everything you need to know about your emotions if you let them, as well as show you things that you could only begin to imagine, about both yourself and existence itself. Open your heart to them, open your wounds to them... their strength is in their healing energies - when you cry, you tap into and release these energies yourself.

BEWARE: it is easy to get addicted to water energy - take care not to drown.

SPIRITS OF EARTH - gnomes

This covers the Earth Dwellers. They who live in, on and of the Earth.

Those in the Earth are mythically called Dwarfs. I prefer the name Stone People, mostly because the name Dwarf has been over used in stories and is often wrong or worse; overly sentimentalized. If it has anything to do with the Earth in terms of soil, rock or stone you will find them. Because they like the dark and are often under things people have connected negative concepts about them.

They are also known as preferring isolation and that hasn't helped their reputation either. That is with the exception of the Stone People that work with small stones such as the crystals and stones  we use for various purposes. They like to interact with people and often use us to move around. Ever picked up a stone for some inexplicable reason and carried it around for awhile or tossed it into a lake or ocean? Or given it to someone as a gift? I bet you thought it was your idea. :-)

When you garden you should remember the Stone People that work in your soil. Work with them and you will find your soil improving. They don't like chemicals, at least the one's I've worked with don't. But like all Elementals that work along side of us they like to be acknowledged. In the future see below as well as my articles  now on Co-Creativity/Co-Partnership to help you work on that and communication with other Elementals.

Plant Spirits are considered Earth Elementals. As I mentioned above Dryads: Tree Spirits are in this category. As are the Nature Spirits of any plant. Any way you work with plants: as a gardener, flower arranger, farmer, chef or herbal healer you are working with Nature Spirits.

Woodlands and fields have their own Elementals ranging from little Nature Spirits to Devas emanating from a whole ecosystem. When you walk in a forest and you feel the cool calmness you are subconsciously connecting with the Deva of that forest. It is to your benefit to make this connection (and all other Elementals and Devas) consciously.

The Garden is situated in a Hollow in the mountains and is "over seen" by a Deva I simply call "The Hollow Deva". Then there is "The Garden Deva" who works directly with me to help create the gardens. When I began to work directly with the Devic Realm I asked if there was a Deva who could focus on this area and work with me for this purpose.

I'll cover how to do this in more detail here in the near future. These are examples of Earth Elementals in the form of Devas that are easily connected with in everyday interaction in working with plants.

Trees are another whole topic to cover separately that I hope to focus on in the future also. Most Dryads, at least the 99.9% of the ones I've met, are very open and willing to work with humans and are wonderful teachers for the first time connections with Elementals.

The only tree I've ever met that didn't want to have anything to do with me was an extremely abused tree in a public park. More on that in the future.

The Earth Elementals correlate with the direction North in the Sacred Circle.

The Form of Our Bodies is of the Earth Elementals.

Gnomes are usually small and squat in appearance as they have to tend to The Garden (this is the earth - they refer to it as The Garden). These are the hardest elementals to try and work with because it takes a lot to gain their trust. In recent years, they have become angry and disheartened with the race of man and what we have done and are still doing to The Garden. But once you show yourself to be true in heart and deed, they become the best friends to have... as they have roots in the earth, so they will also have roots in your heart... one word of warning here: DO NOT BETRAY THE TRUST OF A GNOME. Becareful what you promise, because they will hold you to your word, and if they ever feel you have let them down, you will almost NEVER see them again - some have even been known to will you bad luck for this betrayal (this is why so many stories tell of speaking well of the "little people" or "good neighbours").

The brownies who used to help us in our homes are also gnomes or earth spirits - they chose to live with us in our "boxes" in the hope that we would not lose touch with The Garden... you will find almost no brownies living with humans nowadays.

Have the dedicants read the threads below that are located on the L&S site.  These will help to connect the Elementals to the Watchtowers they guard.

I would like to have them choose an Elemental and do an indepth research on them as a special report.  What do you think?

For our assignment this Lesson, you are going to get down and dirty with the elements and elementals.

Scan the web, especially the L&S main site:
and learn what you can, but then I want you to get "in touch" and get to know them, feel them, experience them. Intimately, like a best friend.

There are 5 elements and types of elemental beings, Earth Air, Fire, Water and Spirit. And there are 5 different projects you will ALL have to do at some point. But for now I am assigning a different Element project to each of you. I expect you all to take the opportunity to do the projects you didn't get assigned as extra credit assignments during the next few months and when you have completed all 5 projects you will recieve a bonus of 100 points toward your final grade in addition to the points you will be earning for completing your homework and extra credits projects.

I want to see you get to know your project element and see how you relate to it, I don't want info from the web, I want your personal experiences.
Go out into nature and get to know your element. Write a sonnet, or poem about it, observe and gather a related object to adorn your altars (no man made stuff, all nature gifted) Here are some suggestions  for you to use to explore your assigned element:

Fans made of Feathers  (study the notes by Leonardo da Vinci on flight) or wind chimes for Air. Learn about the basic periodic elements and gasses that make up the air we breathe, what makes wind? what is our tolerance range for changes in the atmosphere? What have been changes in levels of different gasses in the atmosphere100 years ago? What effect does extremes in altitude, and latitude have on the respiratory system? How do lungs oxygenate blood? How long will a brain survive without oxygenated blood? Listen to the wind,

Flint and rocks or sticks for Fire (MAKE fire, no matches or lighters allowed) cook a meal over an open fire that you built (no charcoals) decribe the entire experience including the reactions of your family, and yes I know it's cold outside. BE CAREFUL if you burn something, (hopefully not yourself or anything else living) write and descibe the result, learn to know both the constructive forces as well as the destructive forces of fire. If you didn't burn anything edible, write about the changes the fuel you used for the fire changed from wood to coal to ash, and what can be done with ash that is constructive.

Collect rain or snowflakes for Water, construct a small fountain (examine the different states of water and why is it so different from other fluids? Did you know that prominent scientist claimed water to be the most amazing substance because of it's unique properties?) Check out discovery.com or the science channel or National geographic.

Earth, reasearch and discover the earth, and how it nakes things grow, filters impuritues and nourishes, how does it do that? Plant something, like an amarylis, or narcissus bulb, to decorate your altar with, take pics of it's growth and post them.  Learn about the soil in your area and why it is the way it is, what is it's history? Or collect stones and use them to make a pedestal for your fountain that you'll do later, learn about what cement is made of to use for mortar, and how it does what it does and why.

Spirit Write a story about the first time the Goddess touched your spirit, examine the difference between now and then, write a poem, or draw a picture or describe the inspiration that motivates you. Sculpt a goddess figure from modeling clay that portrays your vision of Spirit, Describe and explain the function of different types of Muses, and their legends

After you have gotten to know the elements, sit and meditate with these things and feel the energy that powers them, get to know the elementals, write a story about your experiences, both in learning about your assigned element and your getting to know your assigned elemtental being.

Here are your assignments for this lesson:
Autumn Heather.................Air
Diamond Weaver...............Earth
Jasmyne Snow...................Fire
Knyght Skye......................Spirit
Shadow Elf........................Water
Take some time to explore these and do a good job (as I know you all will)

Remember you can do the other elements later for extra credit and get a bonus grade fro completing all 5 before the end of your training.
