It stands for  Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

I recently had a scan on my knee, which allowed the doctors to see so much more than a mere xray, which is for bones only.

What sort of information are you looking for?

I'm impressed Sweet...have you seen the pics and know your results yet? Wac had an MRI done in the summer and then had his arthroscopy on his knee late August. He is fully recovered and has had no further trouble thank goodness.
The MRI pictures show 3D slices of the body rather than a flat image like an xray would provide.

yes, I've got torn ligaments, which obviously cant be seen on an Xray and also some deterioration.  I cant find my report, because it is packed in a box somewhere.  (Will be glad when all the construction and decorating is over

I am still waiting for an appointment with a knee surgeon.  Most of the time the knee doesnt hurt me, except some specific movements.  I think the appointments nurse has forgotten me ... must remember to give her a call on Monday.

basically you lie on a table and have to keep very, very still while you slide slowly into a tunnel.  If you are having a whole body scan, then your whole body goes into the tunnel.

When I had my knee done, I went into the tunnel up to my waist so my head and shoulders were outside.  I had to wear a pair of ear plugs with piped in music and also a means of communicating with the operator/nurse in another room, so they could give directions.

It took about 20 minutes to take the scan.  This was my first experience and I was terrified of having my whole body go into this tunnel.  I'm sure it's quite claustrophobic. So was relieved that my head stayed outside.

It is amazing what they can see.  The report was very comprehensive, because they can see everything from all sides.  Like 3-D pictures.

I'm sure that tigs will add more to this.  She likes to have the last word, you know!

Oh no Sweet you do yourself an injustice on this topic. My information is merely second hand never having had one myself but from reports of people who have had full body scans then yes I do agree it is an unnerving experience that is best not dwelt on as the scanner can be quite claustophobic if a full body scan is required. They are also quite small which I suppose is so the magnetic waves don't have far to travel but some decent music and remaining focussed no doubts goes a long way to keep ing the mind occupied.

6 years ago I had an MRI sacn which took 45 minutes in which time I had to lie as still as a mouse that acat has been chasing.
Sweet is right it can be a bit unnerving as the machine does make a bit of a noise. That's the magnets doing their job.
I had  cyst on my bladder tube which gave me such a lot of pain and other not so very nice symptoms, It  would not show up on an ordinary X Ray or even on an internal scan but it did showed up on the MRI.
If you are having a scan of your tummy or chest areas:
You lie on a bed which slides into the the scanner, the staff sit in a room with a large   window in it so that they can see you,  you wear heaphones so that they can talk you you and you can reply to them.  They also ask you if you wish to listen to music While the scanning is in progress, they will play either classical or modern music .They do ask you to signal them if you are feeling uncomfortable then they stop and make sure you are ok.  Then scanning begins once you are comfortable, there is nothing to be frightened off and it is harmless. YOU MUST take all METAL jewellery off as this can affect the scan process and you feel a tingle where you are wearing metal.
I found that if I closed my eyes and listened to the music I relaxed and all was ok, the time goes quicker than you think !!
As far as I am concerned the MRI scan is one of the best ever inventions for finding things wrong inside the body and it is better to have this and save your life other than be frightened and have nothing done to help you.

I am glad I had the opportunity to have that scan and I have to tell you that without it I would not be here to tell this tale. The surgeon said that I would not have lived another six months had they not found that large cyst that was growing inside my bladder tube and I am glad they did.

MJ.
